FOSTERS SCHOOL BANDS
Iowa School Officials, in Letter to C. M. Tre-
maine, Tell of Direct Value of
Bureau's Work.
Letters showing the direct value of the work of
the National Bureau for the Advancement of Music
are continually being received by C. M. Tremaine, its
director. One recently received from G. R. Prescott,
director of one of the Iowa school bands, specifically
speaks of the influence of the bureau's prizes on the
growth of school bands throughout the United States
and follows this up with a statement that the local
Board of Education has substantially increased its
appropriation for the purchase of band instruments,
as a result of the increased interest. The letter
follows:
"In behalf of the Mason City High School Band,
the public school officials of the Mason City schools,
and myself personally, we would like to thank the
National Bureau for the second prize plaque which
we received on June 26.
"I am certain that the practice of giving plaques
and medals to winners of the state and national band
meets during the past few years has been one of the
greatest factors in promoting the stupendous growth
of good school bands throughout the United States.
"The Mason City Board of Education surely has
gone into the school band work with full force. They
are paying me my regular yearly salary this summer
for summer band work in the high school. Last
year they voted to adopt an appropriation of $1,200
yearly for three years to help the instrumental depart-
ment purchase instruments. Last year we spent this
appropriation about December. Due to their buoy-
ancy over our winning second place at Iowa City
this spring, they allowed me to spend this coming
year's appropriation this summer. I just placed the
order for these new instruments last Monday."
The Clark Orchestra Roll Co., DeKalb, 111., reports
great success with the new music announced in the
August bulletin of rolls for Coinola and Empress Or-
chestrions. The instruments served are "Empress
styles D, C2, X, AF, AX, CF, CB and K. The
new music includes the latest dance hits and radio
winners. A feature of the list of orchestrion music is
the wide variety of foreign rolls.
