GERMAN SIDE OF THE WAR.
Everyone in America is familiar with the condi-
tions which existed during the World War from the
viewpoint of the Allies, but few really have an in-
sight into the other side of the struggle—that is, few
see it in perspective. Now, for the first time, Chi-
cagoans will have an opportunity to see a motion
picture account of "Germany's Side of the War," the
title of the picture which will have its premiere and
only showing in Chicago at the Playhouse Theater
beginning Sunday, July 15. In addition to the student
of world history, this film should appeal to Americans,
British, French, Belgians, Germans, Russians—indeed,
the people of all the nations directly or indirectly
involved in the World War. As an added attraction,
the Playhouse will present Ernest Lubitsch's master-
piece, "The Marriage Circle" with an all-star cast,
including Adolphe Menjou, Monte Blue, Florence
Yidor and Marie Prevost.

SPRUCE FOR SOUNDING BOARDS.
The best spruce for sounding boards grows at an
altitude of from 2,500 to 3,000 feet. The nature of
the ground, of course, has a great deal to do with
the growth of the trees. The best spruce grows
among other hardwood. The growth must be slow.
The closer the grain, the finer the quality. The lum-
ber that enters into the construction of the sound
board must be perfectly clear. The only stock avail-
able for this purpose is taken from the butt logs,
which average from twelve to fourteen feet in length.
A tree for sound board purposes must be of perfectly
straight growth, free from knots and with a smooth
bark. The best trees are sixteen inches or over in
diameter, and in sawing them they must be perfectly
quartered and then sawed into five-eighths inch stock.

Extensive investigation into the matter of the
names of forest trees and woods is to be conducted
soon by the Forest Service Department of Agricul-
ture. In general, the policy to be enforced in making
the investigation is to assign the same name to lum-
ber as the tree from wlv'ch it is cut and to follow the
