just been announced by Frank B. Campbell,
Gibson sales manager. Mr. Edwards is a
former vaudeville artist, who has acquired much
experience with the fretted instruments; in ad-
dition, he possesses a natural ability for pro-
motion work and merchandising. The fact that
he is himself a well-qualified artist gives him
a full understanding of what the artist in the
fretted instrument field really needs and desires.
In this connection, Mr. Campbell stated that
there is a noticeable trend toward the selling
field on the part of many well-known fretted
instrument artists. "As this is coming about,"
said Mr. Campbell, "an opportunity is develop-
ing for the dealer to give concerts and recitals
in his warerooms. This should serve as a real
stimulus to sales and there is no excuse for his
not going after fretted instrument business
when the leading manufacturers of these in-
struments offer such co-operation that is ex-
ceptionally helpful."

the presentation of diplomas and the like. An-
other scheme is to have competitive solos by
the "star" pupils with prominent local music
critics or even the audience as a whole, as
judges.
It is a simple matter for a dealer to arrange
such an annual concert, even if he has no teach-
ing clientele of his own. This can be done by
working with a prominent local teacher or even
independently. It is possible even to clear a
considerable amount of money on the concert,
if the proper talent is secured and the proper
publicity put behind the affair. The fretted
instrument manufacturer is only too glad to
lend a hand on such an occasion and will gen-
erally offer to send a professional soloist as a
headliner for the recital.
Perhaps the best plan of all is to hold regu-
lar recitals at monthly or bi-monthly intervals
in the dealers' warerooms, themselves. Prac-
tically any store of ordinary size will seat
thirty or forty persons and many establish-
ments having a recital hall in conjunction with
the warerooms can accommodate many more.
This affords a real tie-up between music stu-
dents and the musical public with the store and
has been found especially beneficial by dozens
of music dealers in all parts of the country.
