Jack i'vLills, Inc ., s tates that it expects to have
what is probably the biggest Fall sea son that
thi s publishing house has ever experi enced and,
with the opening of th e Fall se llin g months,
it is perhaps not out of place here to review
some of the progress which this house has
made during the past twe lv e months . O ne of
the mo st important of its ac hievements during
that time has been the acquisition of such well
known men in the publishing field as Geo. A.
Friedman, Joe Mittenthal, Ed. Sma li e, Irwin
Das h, Harry Rom aine, Lew Colwell and others,
who a re lIO W a~s istin g in the exp loit a ti on of the
Mill s ca talo g.
During the yea r Jack Mills himself was in
Furope, where he succeeded in acq ui r in g a
number of the Old World' s son g and instru
mental hih. During th e same time Jack Mills,
Illc., was ra ted as a Cla ss _\ firm by the Mu sic
.Publishers ' Protective Asso ciation, which, of
course, did much to insp ire its executives. A
number of bran ch hou ses throughout the coun
try we r e a lso opened during this time to giv e
th e trade better se rv ice.
One of the outs tandin g achi evements of the
yea r was the success of Irving Mills in assem
blin g the Jack Mills ca t alog of "blu es," and, of
cour se , what is proba bly th e bigges t ac hie ve
ment was the occupation of its new quarters in
the Jack Mills B uildin g . A noth er important
ev e nt wa s the app o in tm ent of Clara Edward s,
we ll known as vocalist and composer, to have
c harge of the Jack Mills "Series of Beautiful
Ba llads. "
One thin g may be said for the syndicate
s tores and that is that, in th e handling of sheet
music, they show a proper appreciation of the
Sam Coslow, w ho was assoc iat ed for th e p,,-,t

tion with two of the best-known exec ut ives in
the business, sta rtin !! a new publi s hin g firm
within a ve ry s hort time. Mr. Cos lo w is w idel y

Ed Sma lle has been added to the sta ff of
J ac k Mills, Inc ., as music arranger. .Mr . Sma lle
is one of th e best-known arra ngers in the coun
try and in the preparation of popular fox-trot s
is con si d ered an ar tist.
