tion. Both Messrs. Smith and Stott are well
known in the lyceum and Cha utauqua field a nd
Cla y Smith has won much success as a com ­
poser. Mr. Stott, by the way, wrote the lyrics
of th e song "I Love a Little Cottage," and has
display ed considerable tal ent in that sort of
work.

Federal Trade Commission Holds Special Ses­
sion in New York at Request of Music Pub­
lishers' Association to Determine the Desira­
bility of the Practice in Question
At the- Lyceum and Chautauqua Meeting
was strongly featur ed at the 1. L. C. A. Con­
y entio n h eld rec e ntly in Chicago, which was
attended by some hundreds of lyce um and Chau­
tauqua artists from all sec tions of the country.
The number was sun g before the c0nvention
by Walter Pontius, well-known Chicago tenor,
who was as sisted by C lay Smith, and both the
composer and author of th e so ng w e re on hand
to aid in the work.

in excess of the actual retail selling prices
came up for di s'cllssion last week at a special
hearing held by the Federal Trade Commission
in the headquart ers of the Music Industrie s
Chal11ber of Commerce, New York, with Com­
missi~jier .Van Fleet presiding. The session
was h~ld -3>t the request of the ~u s ic Publishers
of the Unit ed States and was attended by a
majority of the members of that Association
as well as by several outside music publisher s
from the trade.
The conference was w~la t IS known as "trade
practi ce submittal," d esig ned to permit of a dis­
cussion of disputes and ' di ffere nces of opinion
within a trade reg-arding the desirability or un­
d esirability of certain prac tices a nd cu stom s .
The Federal Trade Commission is empowered
to render a dec ision based upon the fact s
gleaned at th e hearing, which has the same
effect as any othpr ruling of the Commission
and is calcldatecl to eliminate chances for liti­
gation,
The Conllliission's deci sion 011 the qucqion of
printing prices on sheet music will probably
not be handed down for some time, but it is
eage rly a,vaited as offe ring a settlement of thi s
question, which has bee n in di sp ute for some
time.
CARRIE JACOBS BOND SONGS ON AIR
Two of Carrie Jacob s Bond's latest songs,
"} -ittle Lost Youth" and "Lazy River," were
included in a program of her numbers broad­
casted from Station WE.'\F, New York, and
a ga in from Station \VJZ, New York, last week.
