Baylis With McDougall-Conn—I. E. Sklare
Returns From Trip to the East
PORTLAND, ORE., June 20.—Louis Mack, sheet
music dealer in the Wiley E. Allen store, says
that the Shapiro-Bernstein number, "Yes, We
Have No Bananas," promises to become a real
hit here.
Stanley Baylis, who recently arrived in Port-
land, has been appointed manager of the sheet
music department in the McDougall-Conn Music
Co., succeeding Kathleen Benoit Campbell, who
resigned.
I. E. Sklare, manager of. the Remick Song
and Gift Shop, of this city, has returned from
a three weeks' trip to the East, visiting New
York, Chicago and Detroit.
CENTRAL PARK CONCERTS CROWDED
Goldman's Band recently entered on its fourth
week of free concerts on the Mall in Central
Park, New York, where its programs have at-
tracted as high as 25,000 people in one evening.
A new march is now being played by this or-
ganization, entitled "On the Mall."
Selected young women piano players will get
six months' advanced study in Paris under free
scholarships to be conferred by a foundation
established by Walter Scott, senior vice-presi-
dent of Butler Bros.
Upon his return from Chicago last week Mr.
Scott said the project had been accepted by
the French Government, which would co-operate
in advancing the interests of the young women
during their stay abroad. They will be placed in
specially chosen small hotels, which will enable
them to pursue their work under the most pleas-
ant auspices, he said.
The fund is to be known as the Walter Scott
Foundation, and while the amount of money
set aside was not made public, it was reported
as "substantial." The fund will be supervised
by Gaston Liebert, former Consul General of
Fiance in New York, and now director of the
French Bureau of Information, and by Alfred
Cortot, trustee of the foundation. Fostering
closer co-operation between French and Ameri-
can musicians was said to be one aim of the
foundation.
Mr. Scott already had made a similar endow-
ment at Smith College.
THE SCOTTISH MUSIC CONVENTION
The following important resolution was put
forward by the Glasgow & West of Scotland
Sheet Music Trades' Association, and duly ac-
cepted:
"That this meeting of the West of Scotland
Sheet Music Trades Association is desirous of
having the Copyright Act, 1911, amended in re-
spect of performing rights. Under the Act at
present no formal notice is required on a copy
of music that performing rights exist in the
work and the absence of this has led to inno-
cent infringement of the right and caused much
irritation to music traders. This Association
therefore urges the S. M. M. A. and the Federa-
tion to take steps to have a short amending Act
introduced to Parliament embodying a provision
whereby all works under which performing right
is enforced should have a notice on the title
page of the music of such right and also give
the name of proprietor or agent, with his ad-

MUS1CALIZING "TORCH BEARERS"
"The Torch Bearers," George Kelly's clever
comedy which had a run last season at the
Forty-eighth Street and Vanderbilt Theatres, is
to go out again, but this time in musical comedy
form. Harry Archer, Cliff Odoms and Arthur
Swamstrom are making the adaptation and Jules
Hurtip; with Stewart and French will produce it.
