The Importance of Economy in the Use of Glue Is Being Realized by Piano Manufacturers, and
Some Practical Hints That Will Prove of Value Along That Line Are Given Herewith
The increased cost of glue has given many
piano manufacturers cause for serious thought,
as the added expenditure for this one item alone
has served in many cases to make a decided
inroad on the profits of the average piano fac-
tory. The Haddorff Piano Co., in a statement
recently published in The Review, gave some
facts and figures relative to the increased cost
of glue used in its factory which demonstrated
conclusively the value of an economical use of
glue.
It is not the purpose of this article to attempt
to give directions that will meet the require-
ments in each and every factory, for that would
be impossible, as there are many conditions
that would vary in different factories, but if the
principle in general is followed, and such minor
change's are made as are necessary to meet the
requirements in your factory, much benefit may
be derived.
In order to arrive at the glue cost one must
keep a daily record of all the stock glued, the
number of pieces, size plies, kind of wood, tem-
perature of glue, etc., and an accurate account
of amount of glue consumed each day. If any
glue is used for other purposes a careful record
must be kept, so that the proper amount may
be deducted, thus finding the actual amount
of glue consumed each day in building up the
stock, to determine actual cost per 1,000 square
feet glue lines.
This record should show amount of water
per 100 pounds dry glue. The temperature at
which the glue is used is also important.
