WATCHING THE GLUE COSTJNA JMODERN PIANO FACTORY
The Importance of Economy in the Use of Glue Is Being Realized by Piano Manufacturers, and
Some Practical Hints That Will Prove of Value Along That Line Are Given Herewith
The increased cost of glue has given many
piano manufacturers cause for serious thought,
as the added expenditure for this one item alone
has served in many cases to make a decided
inroad on the profits of the average piano fac-
tory. The Haddorff Piano Co., in a statement
recently published in The Review, gave some
facts and figures relative to the increased cost
of glue used in its factory which demonstrated
conclusively the value of an economical use of
glue.
It is not the purpose of this article to attempt
to give directions that will meet the require-
ments in each and every factory, for that would
be impossible, as there are many conditions
that would vary in different factories, but if the
principle in general is followed, and such minor
change's are made as are necessary to meet the
requirements in your factory, much benefit may
be derived.
In order to arrive at the glue cost one must
keep a daily record of all the stock glued, the
number of pieces, size plies, kind of wood, tem-
perature of glue, etc., and an accurate account
of amount of glue consumed each day. If any
glue is used for other purposes a careful record
must be kept, so that the proper amount may
be deducted, thus finding the actual amount
of glue consumed each day in building up the
stock, to determine actual cost per 1,000 square
feet glue lines.
This record should show amount of water
per 100 pounds dry glue. The temperature at
which the glue is used is also important.
In figuring sizes the actual size of stock glued
should be used and not the finish size, as some

shapes require more allowance than others, and
what one must know is actual cost per 1,000
square feet glue lines laid, and then it is a
simple matter to figure the glue cost on any
particular article by making the necessary al-
lowance for cutting to finished size. The small
amount of labor involved is negligible in com-
parison with the benefit which may be derived.
If this method is followed, in a short time one
can tell just which is the most economical glue
to buy, and there is an opportunity to make
quite a saving by purchasing the right grade
ot glue.
If one knows what a certain glue costs to
lay per 1,000 square feet glue lines, he can talk
intelligently with the glue salesman and state
just what a glue must do to be of interest to
the purchaser.
A foreman, with information each day or week
as to how much glue he is using per 1,000 square
feet glue lines, will become interested in trying
to produce the greatest amount of stock with

VICTOR ANNOUNCES VOCAL COURSE
Weil-Known Talking Machine Man Appointed
Assistant to President Widmann, of the Pathe
Freres Phonograph Co., This Week
Oscar Saenger Course in Vocal Training Now
Ready—Twenty Lessons in Course—Will Be
Featured Extensively by the Victor Co.
One of the most important announcements
majde by the Victor Talking Machine Co. for a
long time is that of the Oscar Saenger Course
in Vocal Training, which is calculated to em-
phasize more strongly than ever before the mu-
sical standing and importance of the Victor.
In describing the new course the company says
in part:
"The Oscar Saenger Course in Vocal Train-
ing is a practical, efficient system for teaching
people to sing. It is based on the simplest and
most direct principle of all teaching.
"No matter where they may live, all those
who wish to sing may now learn to do so under
the direction of a master who is credited with
having entered more pupils upon successful
operatic, oratorio or concert careers, than has
any other teacher in the United States.
"The , course consists of ten double faced
twelve-inch Victor records which provide twenty
lessons in vocalization. There is a separate
set for each of the following five voices: So-
prano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone and bass.
In the mezzo-soprano there are special instruc-
tions for the training of children's voices. The
kind of voice for which each set is intended is
printed on the outside of the container.

advertising campaign has been designed for the
new vocal course, which will include a double

magazines, and large announcements in daily
newspapers throughout the country. Special

Association of Talking Machine Jobbers an-
nounces that the next annual convention of that
organization will be held at the Hotel Traymore,

a program of business and entertainment that
will surpass even the most brilliant efforts of
former years.
