MERCHANDISE
(Continued fro,n Page 35)
circumstances may move against th e opera-
tor, as in the trend to shorter work weeks
in fa tories, fewer workers, etc.
Th e biggest new fi eld now seems to be
an in creased placing of vendors in stores.
Soft drink vendors have mad e a real entry
into stores a nd a. big finan cial paper re-
cently sa id candy ve ndors need to be placed
in food stores. Operators have alrea dy made
good headway in many types of stores;
th e idea now is to give more attention to
a fi eld on whi ch there is a good deal of
pressure from all sides.
In buyin g merchandi se, operators natu-
rall y still consider pri ce as a major item.
Manufacturers in th e candy a nd gum trades
now work to stabilize pri ces at present
levels. In th e ca ndy trade, th ere is real
fear th a t cut-throat pri ce competition will
eventu ally set in. Price trend s on milk and
i,ce cream are downward . Th e soft drink
tra de still talks mu ch about hikin g th e
ni ckel pri ce, but leaders in th e trade say
this is much too la te now, with pri ce trends
so definitely on th e declin e.
From now until fall , th e bi ggest item in
decidin g prices will be the crop re ports.
Thus fa r, crop conditions a re very favorabl e
to lower pri ces on food s and in gredients
of all Kinds. Th e Texas pea nut area had
unfavora ble plantin g wea ther but thi s may
be overcome.
A review of th e vari ous repo rts on me r-
cha ndi se i tern s follows:
Apples-Scattered r eports of fr ost dam-
age have a ppeared, but th e total cro p
a pparently has good prospects still. Th e
P enn sylva ni a legislature voted on a bill
to ra ise a state fund to promote appl es.
Almonds - Th e nut market has been
qui et for months; in this market almonds
have bee n movin g slowly but th e most
rece nt report says th a t buyin g co mpetition
has perked up considera bly.
Good Advertisement
The best advertisement of the mer-
chandising machine business is the
wide variety of products that can be
sold by machine, and the list grows
from year to year. In the current year,
nylons and hot chocolate seem ready
to become recognized as standard
merchandise for vendors.
Candy Bai·s-As mention ed in other re-
ports in this issue, much more inform ation
on ca nrJy bar supply and market trends
will be avail able foll owing the nation al
convention s of manufa cturers and whole-
salers in June. Governm ent reports show
th at cand y bar sal es for the first two
months of the year were below th e sam e
morith s last year by about 8 per cent. Thus,
the year starts on a declining trend. Other

Chewing Gum - Manufacturers in th e
fi eld plan on sta ble prices a t the present
level. Re ports for th e first qu arter indi cate
that total chewin g gum sales are makin g
good gains over the sam e period last year.
Ciga1·s- Governm ent reports show cigar
output fo r March nearly 3 per cent below
th e sa me month last year, but th at th e
March decline was smaller th an the drop
in F ebruary; thi s report in cludes all typ es
of cigars ; th e popular-priced brands are
showing good sales. For th e nin e month s
of th e present fiscal tax year, cigar output
of all types was only a fraction smaller
th a n for th e previous fi scal period.
Cigarettes - A more complete review
will be found in the section on Cigarette
Vending. Th e trade is bent chiefly on fi ght-
in g state taxes and also in getting more
states to pass unfair cigarette sal es laws.
Th e rate of gain in cigarette sal es this year
is slower than for th e same period a year
ago , but sales are still gainin g.
Cookies- Reports of th e major com-
panies for th e first quarter are th e only
information available, and all the reports
show bigger sales thus fa r in 1949 than for
th e sam e period last year ; all re ports stress
new plants a nd bigger output capa city yet
to come. One report pointed out that gen-

eral busin ess co nditions mi ght redu ce total
sales th is year.
Coffee- An offi cial report shows th at per
ca pita use of coffee still continues upward,
thus maintainin g a 38-yea r trend, but tea
use is declining. A slight declin e in total
co ffee use occurred in 1947. P rice trends
in th e bi g markets are still upward. In th e
vendin g tra de, interest has been aroused
a new in coffee concentrates, as re ported
previ ously.
Lily-Tulip Cup Corp. promises some-
thin g better for vendin g hot coffee and hot
cho colate, in a new plasti c-lined pa per cup
which should be on th e market soon . Th e
firm claims it prese rves the fl avor of hot
beverages better th an anythin g on th e
market now.
Chocolate-The cocoa bean market still
runs a flu ctu atin g course. Th e bi g cho colate
ma nu fac turers report sales of chocolate
powder, cocoa, etc., are still a t high levels,
that consumer demand did not drop as had
been expected. Firms are in creasin g th e
weight of chocol ate bars-best sign that
cocoa and chocolate are cheaper.
Frozen Foods- News directly relatin g ·
to vending machin e use is still lacking.
