An unexpec ted and pleasant surprise
greeted the Bert Beutlers this month wh en
a long di sta nce phone call ca me in from
Santa Ana, Calif., announcing the safe re-
turn of Mrs. Beutler's brother after 3 years
in the India-Burma-China theater of war
as a medic attached to the Ai'r Corps. Sgt.
Luth er Alger, by name, was transferred

by request to Fort Lewis, Wash., for dis-
persal , and there received his furlough
leave of 4 weeks. Laden with citations,
service stripes, campaign pins, a Tibetan
Spaniel dog and worlds of experiences to
relate, Sgt. Alger spent a hectic week with
the Beutlers, receiving a royal welcome
and seeing the Northwest for the first time.
He then trained to San Francisco to
catch a plane for a look at the old home
town of Ashland, Kentucky. He reports
back to Santa Ana after his furlough for
reassignment whi ch he hopes will be Eu-
ropean duty.
City ops who carried furrowed frown s
on their faces when the Byrnes midnight
curfew bell tolled, are smiling broad-
beamedly because play has increased as a
result. A vet op explained it thusly: "The
gang who used to take off at ten p.m. for
some out-of-way night spot and remain
until th e small hours of th e morning stay
in town now because it isn' t practicable
to travel a long di stance for just a few
hours' entertainment. Then, too, there are
phonos and pin games in restaurants and
the curfew doesn't effect th em."

very happy to receive a card from Lt.
Charles M. Howe, one of its form er em-
ployees, who is a prisoner in Germany.
Ace Arnsberg is very busy in defense
work. Harry Arnsberg of the U.S.c.G. re-
cently had a severe injury to his hand ,
however, has been called back and is in
limited se rvice now. With all of the Arns-
berg boys here in the service or in de-
fen se work, their sister, Mildred Israel,
has plenty to do helping run th e North·
west Amusement.
John A. Ruggiero of the Moore Co. San
Francisco offi ce recently took a much
needed rest at Carmel-by-the-Sea. George
G. " Gardy" Goss, form erly with Jack R.
Moore Co. in Salt Lake City, is assisting
John Rugg iero. John Chalman of that
office has recently been inducted into the
service.
Marty Fibiger of th e U. S. Navy is now
in California with his wife, Joan. We
imagine Marty experie nced some rather
exci tin g times, as he was on the U.S.S.

months h as been in Portland, has returned
to assist the new manager, Ralph Perin,
