HE operators today are confronted with
a problem that is greater than anyone
of us alone can solve. It calls for the con-
centrated effort and thought on the part of
the operator together with the help of
the distributors.
The operators have a chance to make
more money than they have had at any time
in the past, provided they can get the nec-
essary equipment-and there is where the
rub comes. The war has created a greater
demand for all types of equipment, but
at the same time has caused curtailment
of production of this type of merchandise
and hence the necessity for wholehearted
co-operation on the part of all of us.
As distributors we are asking our op-
erator customers to conserve and keep in
repair, every piece of equipment they own
in just the same fashion as they are car-
ing for their cars_ By so doing they will
be able to get out of that phonograph,
marble table, or arcade .game, all that could
be expected of it. We distributors are
searching from coast to coast and from the
Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico for
replacement parts of all kinds. In fact we
are bending backward to help in every
way possible to keep the boys' equipment
running_
The majority of the larger manufactur-
ers of replacement parts are now engaged
]00 per cent in war production_ Therefore:
in order to find these parts we are shaking
the bushes in all di'rections, buying
wherever possible, these sorely needed sup-
plies. This, while not too profitable to us '
as distributors, is what we feel is part of
our contribution to the cause of today's
operator.
In this crisis the distributor is not as
fortunate as the operator since our source
of revenue comes from the sale of new
equipment which, at this time, is very lim-
ited. So the best we can do under existing
circumstances is to do our best to help
the operators get by for the duration and,
at the same time, make ready our houses
for the new merchandise that will be avail-
able after the peace has been restored.
Our Industry has been frowned upon by
some; especially since Pearl Harbor, but

one has to go no further than the nearest
army camp and ask the boys how they feel
about -the amusement furnished them by
,the operators of music, marble tables, and
arcade games. They will tell you it has
been a big factor in helping to dispel the
gloom and homesickness so prevalent
among them.
In war plants music has been found a
great help in stepping up production and
relieving fatigue. These fa cts may be had
by writing The Division of Industrial Hy-
giene, Department of Health, State of illi-
nois. They have compiled figures based
on actual tests made in plants before and
after installing music. They fo und in every
case that after music was installed an in-
crease in output w,as agreeably noticeable.
So those of us who oannot join the armed
forces may feel that we have at least a
small part in helping the boys do their jobs
a little more cheerfully, both in the armed
forces and in the defense plants.
Let us all remember what these boys are
doing for us and, in return, do all we pos-
sibly can for them by furnishing them with
entertainment. And, above all, by buying
all the bonds we can for in doing so we
will, in a measure, have done our bit to
speed the defeat of the Axis and hasten
back our boys; and with them, the peace
and freedom we have been accustomed to.
