THE REVIEW:
During the past week I celebrated a
double anniversary which made me realize
how fleeting an element is time. I celebrat·
ed my 26th birthday (which put me in
the "A.K." class around here) and at the
same time marked my sixth month with
this Regiment.
The first occasion was well marked by
my family and friends from back home. I
received more congratul atory messages than
on any other birthday since my Bar-Mitzvah
and that was just 13 years ago, when I was
declared a man for the first time, I
thought. Since then I wondered how much
of a man I would be. However, I was
sincerely glad to receive these reminders
and almost felt as though I were a civilian
again-where emotions may occasionally
ride freer than with a man in uniform_
For some reason we cannot attain the same
emotional peaks and depths which most of
us occasionally reached while at home.
My family has often accused me of for-
getting them, of drawing away from them
because of the coldness, which they claim,
is obvious in my attitude at those infre-
quent times when I get home and in most
of the letters which I write. Since I know
that my love for family, o~ my high re-
gatd for my friends, has not changed,

PITTSBURGH, PENNA.
their attitude puzzled me until I realized
that no longer did I yearn for home or
dream of the past as I formerly did. My
interests, my thoughts were none the less
intense than they had been, when I did
think of home. But the occasions when
these thoughts occupied me were less fre·
quent. And I also found difficulty in con·
stantly reiterating that I appreciated my
family's attitude toward me, the fact that
they missed me and that I was still the
most important subject of their hopes and
ideas and conversation.
It is so extremely difficult, impossible in
fact, to continually stay at one emotional
level without either cracking up or chang·
ing slightly, if only on the surface. It is
almost like the inexplicable change of a
youth to a man. No one,' neither the youth
or his family or friends can mark the
period in which the change into certain
maturity took place. Yesterday, it seemed,
the man was a boy and yet it was not yes·
terday, it was the day before yesterday or
the day before that and perhaps it was
a month ago. That is the manner in which
the attitude of most of us have softly,
easily converted from intensity to accept·
ance to casual, shoulder·shrugging realiza·
tion that our work must be completed en·
tirely before we can really think freely,
hopefully of home. There is a job to be
done; let's complete it, do it thoroughly this
time and then go home.
I don't know how the Hades I deviated
so far from my chatter about my birthday.
However, among the nicest things which
marked my birthday was a cake, sent by
special delivery from home. It had, appar·
ently, patriotically waved two American
/lags atop the frosting when it was shipped
but some saboteur had unknowingly given
the banners a beating during shipment
from Phillyto this spot and only the stars
waved majestically aloft the cake. That
did not bother the boys in the least, how·
ever, and they enjoyed it just as much as
though the cake were undamaged. That one
incident, the delivery of a cake-a symbol
of an old activity- brought more cheer
among us than anything that has happened
in a long time. We have all received gifts,
eating material and other things, but the
shipment of such a gift was unique. How-
ever, within only the hour its symbolism
alone remained, that, and the empty,
crumb-covered box.
During this entire letter I neglected to
discuss the work which has been going
on here for the past month, but it is now
so routine, though never dull, that I can-
not think of anything deserving special
mention. I have had my share of Army de-
tails, including the delightful routine of
K.P. The memory of the days on K.P.,
throughout the past six months, will
brighten my future memories of today. The
nice hot water, the nice clean floors, the
very clean dishes-for all of which I and
four other motherly, fatigue-clothed sol-
diers were periodically responsible. How-
ever, these will be memories similarly cher-
ished by millions of other privates, when
in the reminiscent days to come they dis-
cuss "when I was in the Army, why .. _"
We've already run into a few "veterans"
of a year or two who nostalgically:' dis-
cuss the Army of P.D. (Pre-Draft Days).
In my mention of changing feelirigs a
few words previously I neglected to say that
I have found one strong emoti'on which
has not changed in the least. This is the
admiration, adoration, longing-for and con-
tinual interest in girls. There is no resfraint
in that feeling. If anything it grows strong-
