New Nickel Appears
WASHINGTON (Special).-With Oc·
tuber 17th set as the date un which tu cun-
clude discussiuns and actiuns un the 1942
Revenue Bill nuw befure the Senate, it is
expected that the sectiun referring tu the
Cuin Machine industry will be given final
cunsideratiun un the 15th.
When the bill affecting cuin machines
came up un the fluur un the 10th Senatur
Sheridan Duwney (Califurnia) made a
statement that the present bill was am·
biguuus and cunfusing and required clari·
ficatiun. Senatur Geurge juined in with
him in admitting that the bill was very
unclear and .offered nu ubjectiuns tu an
amendment, which Duwney amended as
fulluws:
"On page 566, line 17, tu add: 'pru·
vided huwever that trade stimulatiun
machines shall nut be cunstrued tu be
gaming devices'''.
Duwney then muved that the matter be reo
ferred tu Cunference which was granted
unanimuusly.
Arthur Muhr, atturney fur the Assuciated
Operaturs .of Lus Angeles 'Cuunty, and Sid·
ney Mackin, managing directur .of the
Amusement Merchants Assuciatiun .of San
Franciscu, are in Washingtun in behalf .of
the measure.
If the suggested amendment is adupted
un the 15th it will result in a $10.00 per
year levy un autumatic phunugraphs, marbl e
tables, and cuunter machines, and a
$100.00 per year tax un any gaming device
equipped with an autumatic payuut mech·
anism. Under the wurdage .of the amend·
ment it is huped tu include marble tables,
cuunter games, diggers, ,and the like, under
the "Trade Stimulatur" classificatiun.
WASHINGTON.- The new wartime nick-
el, a five· cent piece made .of cupper, silyer
and manganese, withuut any nickel tu cun-
serve that cri tical war material, made its
appearance here Octuber 8.
The new cuin, made .of 56% cupper, 35%
silver and 9% manganese, replaces the .old
25% nickel, 75% c<1pper five·cent piece,
but repurters nuted nu difference in the
.outward appearance when Treasufy Secre·
tary Murgenthau passed .out samples.

cent repurt .of the Baruch Cummittee, Gas
RatiQning un a natiunal scale is set tu de-

senger cars in th eir business have been
given B ratiuning cards, which permits 8

unlimited gas. Passenger cars have been

the back seat and painting the name .of the
cumpany un the frunt duur, and this has
