When the bill affecting cuin machines
came up un the fluur un the 10th Senatur
Sheridan Duwney (Califurnia) made a
statement that the present bill was am·
biguuus and cunfusing and required clari·
ficatiun. Senatur Geurge juined in with
him in admitting that the bill was very
unclear and .offered nu ubjectiuns tu an
amendment, which Duwney amended as
fulluws:
"On page 566, line 17, tu add: 'pru·
vided huwever that trade stimulatiun
machines shall nut be cunstrued tu be
gaming devices'''.
Duwney then muved that the matter be reo
ferred tu Cunference which was granted
unanimuusly.
Arthur Muhr, atturney fur the Assuciated
Operaturs .of Lus Angeles 'Cuunty, and Sid·
ney Mackin, managing directur .of the
Amusement Merchants Assuciatiun .of San
Franciscu, are in Washingtun in behalf .of
the measure.
If the suggested amendment is adupted
un the 15th it will result in a $10.00 per
year levy un autumatic phunugraphs, marbl e
tables, and cuunter machines, and a
$100.00 per year tax un any gaming device
equipped with an autumatic payuut mech·
anism. Under the wurdage .of the amend·
ment it is huped tu include marble tables,
cuunter games, diggers, ,and the like, under
the "Trade Stimulatur" classificatiun.

el, a five· cent piece made .of cupper, silyer
and manganese, withuut any nickel tu cun-
serve that cri tical war material, made its
appearance here Octuber 8.
The new cuin, made .of 56% cupper, 35%
silver and 9% manganese, replaces the .old
25% nickel, 75% c<1pper five·cent piece,
but repurters nuted nu difference in the
.outward appearance when Treasufy Secre·
tary Murgenthau passed .out samples.

Conversion Business Brisk
SAN ANTONIO, Tex.- Accurding tu
Haruld W. Thumpsun, manufacturing ac-
tivity un hi s cunversiun units fur Chicken
Sam and Jailbird machines cun tinues brisk.
States Thumpsun:
"It may interest yuu tu knuw that we
have been manufacturing cunversiun uni'ts
fur Chicken Sam and Jailbird machines
.over a periud .of ten munths and a pruduct
surviving that length .of time must have
merits. Our cunversiun units are being suld
by many leading distributurs thruugh~ut
the United States, and we have made shIp·
ments tu uperaturs frum cuast tu cuast in
the United States, as well as Canada and
.other fureign cuuntries. Althuugh we have
suld a very large quantity .of these units
there is nu questiun but what many upera-
turs have paid little .or nu attentiun tu the
fact that these cunversiun units will put
their Ray Guns .on a very favurable earning
basis. We have a standing .offer .of a muney-
back guarantee un all sample units, and
uperaturs .owning machines whu have nut
cunverted shuuld certainly take advantage
.of .our liberal .offer- they have everything
tu gain and nuthing tu luse.
"In additiun tu the "Siamese Rats" unit
which we are manufacturing fur Chicken
Sam and Jailbird machines, we have a very
attractive straight Jap conversiun unl! fur
buth the Bally Shuut the Bull and the
Bally Rapid Fire machines. These units
consist .of a Jap figure and new scenery
prucessed in 16 culurs. Even thuugh the
cunversiun units fur Bally Shuut the Bull
and Bally Rapid Fire machines have .only
been un the market twu munths, we have
enjuyed a very nice vulume .of business .on
them and many repeat .orders frum the up·
eraturs as a result .of the sample they pur·
chased."

Gas Rationing National
LOS ANGELES.-As a result .of the reo
cent repurt .of the Baruch Cummittee, Gas
RatiQning un a natiunal scale is set tu de-
scend upun uperaturs in all .of the states
Nuvember 22.
Anticipating such ra tiuning, there has
been cunsiderable swapping .of lucatiuns in
variuus parts .of th e natiun, with Qperaturs
endeavuring tu cunsulidate their ruutes and
thereby save mileage in cuvering their
sputs.
Accurding tu infurmatiun received frum
Washingtun, each lucal Buard has supreme
authurity .over lucal affairs, althQugh the
pulicy making is dune by the OP A .office
in Washington. The uperatur's categury is
that .of vending machine maintenance men,
which entitles each persun tu a preferred
card, knQwn as Card "e." This, .of cuurse,
is subject tu lucal cunditiQns, .over which
the head .of the lucal buard has exclusive
jurisdictiun .
On Octuber 7, Arthur Muhr, atturney fQr
Assuciated Operaturs .of Lus Angeles Cuun-
ty, wrute frum Washingtun: "Mr. Bell .of
th e OP A has tuld me that frum their expe·
rience in the 13 eastern states they have
catalugued certain uccupatiuns and have
listed them under specified headings
accurding tu their requirements. Men in
.our line are listed as 'Vending Machines
Maintenance Men' and given a preference
card - "C," but he says that lucal cundi'·
tiuns will guvern su that if in any district
the maintenance .of machines requires a
~reater m:!eage area, th en the gallunage is
Illcreased.
In the east uperaturs using their pas-
senger cars in th eir business have been
given B ratiuning cards, which permits 8
galluns per week. Operaturs with truck .or
statiun waguns have S cards, alluwing them
unlimited gas. Passenger cars have been
changed intu statiun waguns by taking .out
the back seat and painting the name .of the
cumpany un the frunt duur, and this has
been acceptable tu lucal buards in .obtain·
ing an S card.

The football season opens across the na -

A beauty, by name Henrietta ,
I nvariably wore a tight sweater.
Three reasons she had;
To keep warm wasn't bad,
But the other two reasons were better.

Tom Murray Retires
FORT WORTH, Texas-Tom Murray
has retired from the coin machine publish·
ing field and will devote all of his time to
a publication of his own which covers ~.
other industry.
This announcement came out of Fort
Worth this month when Murray let it be
known that the Venetian Blind News, a
publication which he started a few years
back, would require all of his attention in
the future.
Murray is one of the old timers in the
industry. He launched the Automatic World
as the second independent coin machine
paper in the industry back in 1930,-;;hd
lays claim to having coined the word "Op"
as expressive of the operators connected·
with the industry.

LOS ANGELES.-Solly Solomon, man·
ager of Western Distributors, Seattle, paid
Los Angeles a visit the first part of October
and stopped in at the REVIEW offices to
talk over the good old days when he was
located locally.
Solly flew from Seattle to San Fran·
cisco where he spent a day or two with
Lou Wolcher befo~e hurrying on to Los
Angeles to meet his son, Walter, who is in
the Coast Guard and arranged to be here
to greet his father. Walter has completed
three years in the service and is now in his
second term.
During the summer Solly entertained his
father, Edward E. Solomon" on the first
vacation he had had in fifty years. Now 82,
he boasts of 62 years practicing law in the
state of Texas.

Laymon Has United Games
LOS ANGELES. - The operators have
made Paul A. Laymon's establishment a
"must" Tor the past ten days to examine the
refurbished United Manufacturing Coo's
Midway and Sun Valley on display. Com·
ments have been most complimentary and
the consensus of opinion seems to be that
United is doing an A·l job in rebuilding
and redesigning marble tables.
Interest locally has been especially keen
for Harry Williams, a former West Coast
manufacturer, is half owner of United and
well known to coinmen in these parts.
United's first two games are exceptionally
well done and only an expert could tell
them from spanking new games.
