Post-War Merchandising
The candy manufacturing
industry is going to give much
attention to the methods of
distribution in the post - war
set-up. The stress and strain of
the old-line distributing set-up,
under the trying war conditions
has focused attention on more
efficient methods. Already can
dy jobbers are studying ways
and means to perfect t h e i r
function, which is admission
that the old ways have become
outmoded. In the reshuffling
that is bound to come, Auto
matic Age strongly is of the
opinion that candy merchan
dising through candy vending
machines will get an important
part. This method has proved
its worth by making nutritious
candy available to consumers
in factories and plants which

JIVE STUFF FIRST
WITH LADS IN HAWAII
The girls back home will be
glad to hear that their soldier
and sailor boys in the Hawaiian
Islands are not spending their
off-hours under p a l m trees
whooping it up with the hula
or other native music. In fact,
even the natives themselves,
like our fighting men, are some
what passing up the romantic
tunes of the islands in favor of
the hot, sweet, or swing offer
ings of such singers and bands
men a s D i n a h S h o r e , Lena
Horne, Duke Ellington, Tommy
Dorsey, and Sammy Kaye.
It isn’t that Hawaiian music
has passed out of the picture —
the boys like it, of course — it’s
just that America’s l e a d i n g

music makers have landed and,
like the Marines, have the situ
ation well in hand. The fighting
forces are getting their favor
ites on records, played on the
thousands of portable, hand-
operated phonographs t h a t
were shipped by RCA Victor to
the islands.
This use of the small phono
graph is particularly marked in
the American submarines that
prowl enemy waters. There,
with grave peril always pres
ent, the sailors enjoy the re
corded classics as well as the
popular pieces. Phonographs
are an important part of the
submarines’ recreational equip
ment because radio programs
are of necessity ruled out.
It’s hard to believe the im
portance that has come to be
placed on music by our boys on
the islands. On days when car
goes from the mainland are
opened (shipments of records
arrive from a week to three
weeks apart) the p o s t ex
changes and c i v i l i a n music
stores are jammed with service
men standing three and four
deep at the counters to get their
records. Military authorities
have recognized the value of
music as a morale-builder and
have assigned definite percent
ages of cargo space for records
and phonographs.
The war has brought phono
graphs and modern American
music to practically every is
land — and there are many
more of them than you think—
scattered around in the Pacific.
Even Midway Island has an
automatic phonograph.
Operators and manufactur
ers are invited to discuss their
ideas for individual and indust
ry-wide postwar planning. Au
tomatic Age is ready to lend
its support to stimulate projects
which will aid in putting the
coin machine industry in the
forefront.
