with the tremendous require
ments of the armed forces, and
the quantities exported under
lend-lease. One operator in a
small industrial city writes:
“Why are Camel cigarettes
very few at this time? We are
not receiving our usual supply
and would like to know what
the indications are for the fu
ture on the other standard
brands. Any information lead
ing us to what the difficulty is
will be highly appreciated.”
Out of the maze of claims
and counter claims, it is a nat
ural result of manpower prob
lems, increased consumption
and new outlets for a l a r g e
part of the cigarette produc
tion. The answer, even if for
temporary period of time, is to
use more of the less popular
brands. It is better to have less
popular brands in machines,
than to have empty columns. It
is noteworthy to consider the
r a d i o announcements of a
brand which is coming up in
favor. They plug the manufac
turers’ farsightedness in stock
ing up on leaf tobacco, and con
sequently have plenty of cigar
ettes. Actually, the case may
be that this manufacturer has
not used its quota of available
leaf tobacco.

GUM MACHINE RAIDS!

chewers are solving their prob
lem by buying out gum vending
machines, since over-the-coun
ter sales of gum has also felt
the pinch of a s h o r t a g e of
chewing gum. Several opera
tors report that they frequently
find a number of their gum ven
dors empty when making a
service call, and find the re
quired number of pennies in the
machine for the gum they had
inserted on the previous call.
Gum chewing has boomed. It
is relief to the tenseness of
workers. No doubt these inces-

“They’re hep, those kids,” was
