PROBLEMS
CHECK PINOUTS
The hands were not aligned
properly causing the game to
declare it bad every so often. One
of the =#=86 bulbs were burned
out, and it was noisy.
Also, the pins that go between the
two board have a tendency to
tarnish after getting cooked for a
while in the heat ... this will cause
connectivity troubles between
the mintutes and hours optos
boards. Cleaning the pins ( using
either steel wool, pencil eraser or
a razor blade) will restore the cir-
cuit. This problem can cause
symptoms similar to bad optos.
If you keep replacing optos and
SYMPTOMS
Even the =#=86 bulbs produce too
much heat. There were discolora-
tion marks on the PCB fiberglass
by the bulbs. Not quite scorch
marks, but still serious discolora-
tion.

The fix of drilling holes above the
PCB's (as reported in a previous
issue of S'JJJ plus the following
clarification:
• The holes above must be in two
places - above the hours opto
board (ie: the gearbox section) for
ventilation for the hours optos
• And over the minutes opto
board, but between the board
and the clock facing -otherwise
the heat from the light bulbs can-
not escape.
• Also drill inlet vents on the
clock sides at the very bottom to
allow for cool air to vent in, then
out the top.
"Originally, the
lamps in the Twilight
Zone clock were
controlled lamps ... ,,
they go bad again or act intermit-
tently bad, this might be the
problem.
ADDING DIODES
Lastly, D1-D4 on the minutes
opto board have zero ohm jump-
ers installed. Wms did this appar-
ently when the clock lamps went
from controlled lamps (which
require diodes) to GI lamps
(which don't). Installing 1N4001
diodes here (Radio Shack has
them for 25 cents each) or even
1 N 4004 if they're on hand, (like

Future scanning projects are planned by the International Arcade Museum Library (IAML).
