(PART 1)
EXPO
REPORT
This years AMOA (Amusemen( & Music Operators Association) annual industry trade show was held only
a stones throw away from the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas on September 23-25. An expected 8,000 opera-
tors, distributors and manufacturers were in attendance.
BLUE RIBBON
Best of show was once again
awarded to Midway Manufactur-
ing for their work on Killer In-
stinct, the industry's first high-
resolution real-time fighting
video. Killer Instinct features 10
extremely life-like warriors; com-
puter generated similar to the
computer rendering of the Lawn
Mower Man.
Midway boasts that each warrior
possesses over 100 moves and up
to 15 multiple hit combinations.
Ten 3-D battlefields with an ad-
ditional 10 secret battlefields.
With 20,000 frames of animation
and texture mapped back-
grounds, Killer Instinct uses 170
Meg of memory (more than any
other game ever). Due to the vast
amount of storage needed to
store KI, conventional storage
means are impractical.
Midway, with the help from Rare
Ware had to design a whole new
hardware system. What they
came up with is a hard disk drive
for storage being read straight
into the RAM running at ap-
proximately 60 MHZ and driven
by Nintendo's new Ultra 64 bit
system (according to sources at
Midway). This is a must-see
game.
Four cars to choose from and a
host of secret ones too. 14 start-
ing points to choose from or se-
