EXPO
REPORT
This years AMOA (Amusemen( & Music Operators Association) annual industry trade show was held only
a stones throw away from the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas on September 23-25. An expected 8,000 opera-
tors, distributors and manufacturers were in attendance.
BLUE RIBBON
Best of show was once again
awarded to Midway Manufactur-
ing for their work on Killer In-
stinct, the industry's first high-
resolution real-time fighting
video. Killer Instinct features 10
extremely life-like warriors; com-
puter generated similar to the
computer rendering of the Lawn
Mower Man.
Midway boasts that each warrior
possesses over 100 moves and up
to 15 multiple hit combinations.
Ten 3-D battlefields with an ad-
ditional 10 secret battlefields.
With 20,000 frames of animation
and texture mapped back-
grounds, Killer Instinct uses 170
Meg of memory (more than any
other game ever). Due to the vast
amount of storage needed to
store KI, conventional storage
means are impractical.
Midway, with the help from Rare
Ware had to design a whole new
hardware system. What they
came up with is a hard disk drive
for storage being read straight
into the RAM running at ap-
proximately 60 MHZ and driven
by Nintendo's new Ultra 64 bit
system (according to sources at
Midway). This is a must-see
game.
Four cars to choose from and a
host of secret ones too. 14 start-
ing points to choose from or se-

ish. Cruis'n USA is available in

a full motion simulator.
NEW DRIVER

Daytona USA is another great
driver which is being produced by
Sega. Instead of a street rod as in

deluxe 50" big screen or a twin
sitdown cabinet with 26" high-
resolution monitor. This game is
highly recommended to those of
you that can afford the $16,000+
sticker price. If you can't, I sug-
gest you get 2 sit-down Cruis'n
USA's with the link kit and over-
head lighted marquee, and you
will save a couple of grand.
BATTLEGROUND
Primal Rage is a head to head
battle featuring 7 stop motion
and computer generated charac-
ters from the Jurassic age. Each
has 9 to 12 moves including pow-
erful special moves and at least 2
finishing moves. Available in the
"Showcase 33" and a 26" upright.
Going by the play and the latest
test figures, you can not go wrong
with this one.
SPORTS
awarded with their choice of a 7"
street basketball or tickets.
Rage 'n the Cage is my pick of
sports games from the show. It
features a basket that moves for-
ward and back, gas plasma dis-
play, tubular frame construction,
metal top and side screens in-
stead of nylon netting.
The machine will hold 30 balls to
be dispensed and the operator
may set the point value for a win.
I suggest 100 points for a full
game.
But what sets this game apart
from the rest is the incentive to
play the game. For when the
player plays a full game and the
proper number of points are
achieved, he/she would be

made and only 25 per week are

MORE FIGHTERS
Dark Stalkers is Capcom's entry
into the running this year.
Capcom has done it again. Try-
ing to revive that same old Street
Fighter style of play that made
Capcom a household name. This
time, they bring back from the
dead elements from the under-
world like the Werewolf, Vam-
pire and Frankenstein.
10 characters in all, are forced to
do battle in the same old way as
Ken and Ryu. Although it's the
same old game with different
characters, it is currently our
number one piece. It would be
nice if we could see something
new from Capcom, but as long as
the cash boxes are full, who
cares?

MORE TO COME NEXT MONTH ...
We will be reviewing more games fro m the show including ·
the new pinballs, Data East's Tattoo A ssassins, Sega's Virtua
Cop, American Lasers new CD-Rom Game System, SNK/
Taito's Bust-A-Move and ... the hottest new craze sweep-
ing across the country, POGS.
