BALLY
BABY PAC-MAN SWITCHED ILLUMINATION MOD
ATARI
QUANTUM MONITOR MOD
By Dennis P. Sable, Spring Valley Amusement, Virginia Beach, VA
We recently received the following letter from one of our readers . ..
Dear Star*Tech Folks:
We have subscribed to your publication for over two years and find it to be one of the
most important tools in our "box" when it comes to keeping up with the ever-changing
amusement industry electronics.
Since input from other operators has helped me in the past, I thought I would pass
along a couple of tips to them through you.
1. The Bally Pinball Switched Illumination Mod in S*TJ, Vol. 5, No. 1, March
198 3, has helped greatly to control burnt lamps and failing SCRs in all of my Bally pins
using the #555 lamps except Baby Pac-Man. Baby Pac uses a special winding on the
transformer to power the switched illumination. Bally has given me some help. The
Bally service technician advised me to change the transformer taps from 115vac to
120vac. This is simply done by moving pin 3 on JI to pin 4 on JI and pin 10 on J1 to pin
11 on J 1, effectively cutting the power to everything. This mod works fairly well and
will suffice until Bally comes up with something better.
2. Bob McKee of Atari gave me a tip on the Atari Ampliphone Monitor(Quantum).
The -24vdc regulator (7924) on the high voltage board "blew up". Mr. McKee
stated that in some of the early ampliphone monitors Rl 8 was left out. If this happens to
you, the following techniques should solve your problem:
A) Insert R18 (27k or 33k ¼ watt) resistor in the holes marked R18 on the high
voltage PCB.
B) Change the -24vdc regulator and C4.
C) Install two diodes ( 1 N 4001) across the leads of C3 and C4 ( on the underside of
the board) with the cathode attached to the positive lead of each cap and the
anode to the negative lead
I hope these mods help you!
How about those color monitor games that aren't making money anymore?
