"FLAT RATE"
prices for all repair and exchanges
on printed circuit boards:
24-HOUR TURNAROUND UPDATE
In an effort to streamline the processing and speed up our
printed circuit board repair/exchange program, we have
established a "flat rate" price for all repair and exchanges
(Monitor PC Boards not included).
These rates will NOT apply: (1) II board has been
brutalized or damaged by the customer. Missing components
wil! be charged separately. (2) Two sets of boards in metal
cases.
"Flat rate" charges will apply in ALL other cases.
We recently received the following letter as an update to last month's article on Sega 's new 24-hour
rapid return on serviced parts.
Dear Star*Tech Journal,
SEGA Customer Service has had a 24-hour board turnaround service in operation since May 16,
1983. The policy as stated affects all electronic assemblies, printed circuit boards, power supplies,
and, in most cases, switching regulators and monitors.
Not only has SEGA Customer Service made this 24-hour rapid turnaround in all but one case, but
21 % of the time we have provided same day service. The one exception was an equipment failure in
our Shipping Depl, and rather than take a chance and have the customer receive damaged material
due to improper packing, I decided to delay the shipment one day until the equipment was repaired
and shipment properly packaged.
Yours in service,
Bob Klinefelter

POWER DISTRIBUTION FOR THE GG-111 VIDEO SYSTEM
OPEN 24 HOURS!
DAY: (415) 648-5466 NIGHT: (415)359-5641
Power distribution for the GG-111 Video System is associated with two separate assemblies: ( 1) the
bottom panel assembly and (2) the power supply assembly ( A3 ). The power supply, used to supply all
voltages, is extremely tolerable of input line voltage variations. All output source voltages are
guaranteed to be stable for line voltages vacying from 95vac to I 35vac 60Hz. The regulated logic
+5vdc level is rated at 6 amps maximum and includes over-voltage crowbar protection. Four LEDS
on the power supply indicate that the associated voltages to the regulators are present
A A AMAZIN' AMUSEMENTS, INC.
BOTTOM PANEL ASSEMBLY
The input AC line voltage is filtered and wired to the 115 vac primary winding tap and the common tap
of the transformer on the bottom panel. The secondary winding supplies five separate voltages. The
isolated I 15vac supplies the monitor voltage as well as the illumination assembly voltage.
The 9vac RMS winding is full wave rectified and filtered to + l l.5vdc average voltage. It is
directly routed to the power supply via the filter board. The 6.3vac RMS fused winding is also rectified
and supplies the +4.5vdc average voltage. The negative side of the bridge is sent to the power supply
board for grounding while both the positive and the negative sides of the bridge are sent to the front
door to operate the coin chute lights. The I 5 vac as well as the 3 5 vac are both routed directly to the
power supply via the filter board.

POWER SUPPLY ASSEMBLY (A3)
The +11.Svdc entering the power supply board is regulated to +5vdc by Ql 1, Q12 and Ull and is
adjustable by VRl. R15 and VRl, along with RI6, divide the regulator output voltage to +2.5vdc at
the reference pin of Ul 1, the programmable zener. As the output voltage rises, the voltage on the
reference pin on Ul 1 will rise. To compensate the rising output, Ul l then draws more source current
away from the base of Q 12. This in tum turns off Q 11, which drops the output voltage.
As the output voltage of the regulator falls, the reference pin voltage falls, turning off Ul l . This
will increase current flow through Q 12 which in tum will increase current from the emitter to collector
on QlI, raising the output voltage.
The over-voltage crowbar circuit mentioned earlier consists ofC14, D12, Rl 7, Rl8 and SCRl 1.
The SCR requires 1.4v gate to cathode in order to turn on. The zener is rated at 5.6v. Therefore, a
voltage of 7v on the + 5vdc line will trigger the SCR (7v - 5 .6 rated zener volts = 1.4v). Once the
SCR is on, the +5vdc line is shorted to ground, allowing the fuse to open, preventing over-voltage
damage to the TTL. Rl 7 is a current limiting resistor for the SCR and Rl8 is the zener resistor. Cl4
filters out voltage spikes that could trigger the SCR
- The 35vac RMS is rectified and filtered and is regulated to +30vdc viaD26, Q21 andR23. D26
sets up 30vdc for the base of Q2 l which is an emitter follower arrangement. Since the emitter follower
has a voltage gain that is less than unity, the only voltage lost is from base to emitter which is
approximately a 0.8v junction drop.

The center-tapped l 5vac RMS is utilized to supply three voltages. It is full wave rectified by D4 l
and D42 in order to supply the +20vdc average voltage used for the coin meters. It is also full wave
rectified by D31-D34 in order to supply the plus and minus 12vdc. The positive side of the bridge
feeds the LM340T (U3 l) + l 2vdc regulator while the negative side of the bridge is sent to the LM320
(U4 l) which regulates the - l 2vdc. D36 and D44 are used as protection diodes in the event that the
output of the regulator exceeds the outpul.
