BEETHOVEN AND NATURE
We are pleased to publish on our front cover the
picture of Beethoven and Nature from.a painting in
the Steinwjay Collection. It was painted by N. C.
Wyeth. Beethovan had a dramatic career in which
the drama was often very tragic. He lavished every-
thing he possibly could on a rather worthless nephew
who was banished from Vienna in 1826. Beethoven
went with him to a farm. Whether this picture rep-
resents a walk in that locality or not we do not know.
However, the picture is in the mood of our splendid
Autumn season when we love to walk in the woods.

MUSIC — IN THE SUMMER TIME
4
A Short Editorial
Unless one makes a study of the musical activities
of Americans in the summer time one is not likely
to have the slightest idea of the magnitude of those
activities. Our great cities like New York, Chicago,
Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, Los Angeles, Minne-
apolis, San Francisco, Cincinnati and many others
are really beehives of musical activity during the
summer. I shall take Chicago as an example of this
outstanding summer musical activity in a great
center, simply because I live in Chicago and attend
many musical programs. The other great centers
are jiust as active as Chicago. We enjoy listening to
their programs over the radio. In Chicago we have
the great open air concerts in Grant Park on the
shores of Lake Michigan attended by hundreds of
thousands of interested listeners during a season.
The Chicagoland Musical Festival sponsored by The
Chicago Tribune Charities is a tremendous affair in-
volving many preliminary musical contests. Tt drew
contestants and attendants this year from 32 states
and sections of Canada.
But the smaller cities and even the rural districts
have their splendid musical activities. There are such
permanent musical centers as "Jnterlocken — The
National Music Cam])" at Interlocken, Mich., which
makes a remarkable contribution to our musical life.
( )n the evening of July 12, I attended a presentation
<>! "Carmen" splendidly done by aspiring young
artists in the open air in International Friendship
Gardens, a beautiful park near Michigan City, In-
diana. It was called "Opera Under The Stars." It
was inspiring to see and hear this opera by such
promising young Americans. America is alive with
music—good music too.
