MARION RNDERSON
GREAT CONCERTS IN HARTFORD, CONN.
In Hartford, Connecticut, there is a magni-
ficent hall to the memory of that distinguished
citizen, Horace Bushnell, one of the famous
clergymen of New England. Horace Bushnell
Memorial Hall is a real cultural center carrying
on a program year in and year out. We were one
of a vast crowd that packed the immense audi-
torium recently to hear Marion Anderson. The
musical value of this Hall is inestimable to its
community.
PRUL
Paul Whiteman celebrated his twentieth an-
niversary in the music business recently. Leaders
all over the North American Continent have
signified their good will by dedicating numbers
to "Pops." Paul's interests are diversified and
include a farm and "Walk-Along," the prize
walking horse, which is his pride and joy and
which he entered and rode in the National Horse
Show in Madison Garden, New York City.

OLDEST MUSIC DEALER IN U. S. STILL GOING STRONG
Mr. Joseph R. Balliet will celebrate his 92nd birthday
on February 26th. Heartiest congratulations to you, Mr.
Balliet! Mr. Balliet has been in the music business under
the same name and in the same location for the past 68 years
at Belvidere, Illinois.
Mr. Balliet's parents were pioneer settlers who came to
Illinois from Mauch, Pennsylvania. "Uncle Joe", as he is
known to his many friends, was born in a log cabin just fifteen
miles north of DeKalb, Illinois. At the time of his birth,
James K. Polk was President of the United States, and Lincoln
was a rising young politician in Springfield, Illinois.
In 1872 Mr. Balliet quit teaching country school and
opened a music store in Belvidere, as a Wurlitzer dealer. In
1874 he married Miss Mary L. Detrick. They celebrated their
golden wedding anniversary before she passed away in 1930.
A Civic Leader
He was chiefly responsible for giving the city its telephone
service and its first electric lights. The largest industrial
plants now operating in Belvidere located there chiefly
through his leadership. Last year he presented the local First
Presbyterian Church with a $5,000 pipe organ as a memorial
to his wife.
MICHIGAN AT CONGRESS
CHICAGO
Eighteen years ago he took up golf which has nearly dis-
placed his old fishing and hunting hobby. His only "evil"
habit is his pipe or a mild cigar. Today Mr. Balliet is still
going strong. His long career of achievement is a splendid
example to the Music Trade. In our next issue we will have
pictures of "Uncle Joe" and his store.
