A SALE WORTHY OF MENTIONING
"A great advertising genius," says Gordon Laughead, Story
& Clark Sales Manager, speaking of W. H. Howard, adver-
tising director of R. H. Macy & Co., New York City, who
selected a while back a special finish Storygrand for his home
in Greenwich, Conn. The sale was consummated by Carl-
friedrich Kob, General Manager of the piano department of
Lyon & Healy, Chicago. The piano was finished in the Lyon
& Healy finishing department under Mr. Kob's direction. It
is a most attractive grand piano in bleached mahogany to
match the furnishings of Mr. Howard's home.
CONGRATULATIONS TO
GRETSCH COMPANY
The Fred Gretsch Manufacturing Co., Inc., won its appeal
before the United States Customs Court in relation to the
tax on flutes, fifes, and whistles, which it claimed were not
toys but musical instruments, and dutiable at 40 per cent ad
valorem instead of at 70 per cent, as c'aimed by the United

A SUCCESSFUL BANQUET
The Chicago Piano and Organ Association held its fortieth
annual banquet on Thursday evening, February 2nd, at the
Palmer House, Chicago. Young roast stuffed Vermont tur-
key with all the "fixins" furnished a fine menu. The program
was exceptionally entertaining. The artists featured were
Arthur (Art) F. Briese, "America's Knight of Satire"; John
DeBoer, popular Chicago pianist; Eddie and Pete, Accordion-
ists; the Trumpet Trio, Boys' Club Prize winners; and John
Burdette, baritone singer of negro spirituals.
The officers of the Association are Stanley Morrow, Presi-
dent; Frank Bennet, First Vice-President; Robert Fanning,
Second Vice-President; Adam Schneider, Treasurer; and Jos.
A. Vogt, Secretary.
WILKING MUSIC CO. RAISES UNIT
PRICE OF USED PIANOS
Taking an idea from the automobile people the Wilking
Music Co. of Indianapolis, largest exclusive piano house in
Indiana, have placed the Certified OK on their choice used
pianos.
The Certified OK was started last summer and has raised
the unit price of used pianos considerably. Wilking shopmen
can afford to give added care and time to the Certified pianos
because it pays. For these pianos the Wilking Music Co.
chooses its finest used instruments; those with the proper
pitch and retention of tuning. A red tag is attached to each
certified piano testifying that it has been tuned, action regu-
lated, voiced, moth proofed, renovated, cleaned, and polished.
Other items checked on the card as the work is completed in-
clude bridle tapes, keys, hammers, dampers, pedals, sound
board, and pin block. When the work is finished the shop
foreman inspects the piano and signs his name to the Certi-
fied OK tag.
The Certified OK idea is carried out in Wilking Music
Co. advertising in Indianapolis newspapers. A cut of the
Certified OK tag is occasionally carried in the ads to dra-
matize the work which goes into used pianos. Mr. Frank
O. Wilking, president of the Wilking Music Co., believes
that the Certified OK is well adapted to the piano business
because few buyers are capable of judging a good used piano.
