T H E P E O P L E ' S SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.
At the Eighth Street Theater, Wabash avenue at
Eighth street, Chicago, Sunday, February 5, at 3 p. m.,
the fifth concert was given by the People's Symphony
Orchestra. P. Marinus Paulsen is conductor and the
soloist, was Helene Pollenz, pianist. The concert
was under the direction of Bertha Ott. Mr. Paulsen
is one of the best known of American conductors,
and has, in addition, won distinction as a violinist
and composer. The concerts will continue every
Sunday until April 29. The Mason & Hamlin piano
supplied by the Cable Piano Co. is used in the
theater.
PLAY RARE VIOLINS.
The entire collection of rare violins, violas, cellos
and double basses owned by Rodman Wanamaker
will be played in a gala invitation concert on Tuesday
night, February 28, at the Metropolitan Opera House,
New York, given by Mr. Wanamaker in honor of the
master makers of stringed instruments and also as a
tribute to the Italian colony of New York City, which
Mr. Wanamaker feels has made so large a contribu-
tion to the city's material and musical progress. A
"cappella" of noted musicians will be accompanied by
the entire string sections of the Philharmonic and
Philadelphia Orchestras.
AN ODD NUMBER.
A quintet for woodwinds and piano very rarely
done and original in the form in which it was played,
was the high spot of the Musical Album of Popular
Classics broadcasted by the Columbia through W O R
in Chicago last week. The quintet for woodwinds
and piano, op. 16, by Beethoven, included a horn,
oboe, clarinet and bassoon.
Manufacturing in La Porte, Ind., Factory Discon-
tinued by Lyon & Healy, Chicago.
The manufacture in La Porte, Ind., of saxophones
and certain other lines of musical merchandise by
Lyon & Healy, of Chicago, has been discontinued.
Announcement was made last week that the factory
of the E. A. Couturier, Ltd., makers of brass instru-
ments located in the county seat, was being closed
permanently. The Couturier Company was taken
over by the Lyon & Healy organization about four
years ago and has since been operated as a subsi-
diary of the Chicago company.
Rumors that the factory was simply being removed
from La Porte to another city were flatly denied by
officers of the company who stated that the sales
volume for the products of the La Porte factory had
proved insufficient to result in a profit for the com-
pany and the plant was being permanently closed.
A. H. Budahn, La Valle, Wis., is adding pianos.
