HOW FRIELD MILLER & COMPANY HELPS THE PIANO DEALERS
An Indianapolis indus-
try of great importance to
the music business, espe-
cially the piano dealer, is
that of Frield Miller &
Company, engaged in re-
covering piano keys. Mr.
Miller is the originator of
key re-covering on a large
scale.
Practically every
piano tuner or repairman
connected with the music
merchants is capable of
re-covering keys, and mak-
ing them presentable, but
few are capable of con-
verting old shabby key-
boards into practically new
ones, in the time that this
concern does the work,
and giving them the ap-
pearance of a set of new
keys.
Frield Miller, in his
early boyhood, helped his
father, a piano builder by
trade, do repair work such
as a boy of his age was
capable of doing. Long
A CORNER OF THE
before he reached man-
hood he was employed in
the eastern piano factories, where he started as an
apprentice, working in all branches of piano building,
and finally mastered the art of tuning. After coming
to Indianapolis he took up the work of tuning and
repairing in some of the largest houses in the city,
and until 1922 when he entered the field for him-
all the work and the price is so reasonable that many
dealers anxious to increase the value of the instru-
ments taken in exchange are regular patrons. Nine
different pieces of machinery, each motor driven, are
used in the work, and keys from all parts of the
United States have been covered, and some from the
Hawaiian Islands. The work covered with genuine
ivory is all done by hand, and polished by machinery.
Sharps are cut down and refinished and made to
look like new. In fact, when an entire set of keys is
sent to be worked over they leave the shop with
the appearance of one coming right from the orig-
inal manufacturer.
All the pieces of machinery are the inventions of
Mr. Miller. They enable the company to turn out
the work the same day it is received, and to this serv-
ice is practically due the growth of the business.
Another service rendered is the re-bushing of keys,
and recapping. This branch is very important and
the work is carefully executed. Few complaints have
ever been made about any of the work and the policy
of the company is to satisfy all customers. Since
the inception of the company it has been obliged to
seek larger quarters on three occasions owing to the
increasing business, and at present the capacity is
taxed to the limit.
Mr. Miller is assisted by his sons, Paul and Charles,
and several skilled mechanics. Specimens of the
work are gladly sent to any one interested, and quo-
tations are available on application.

self, he was considered one of the best mechanics in
the city. In 1922 he entered the re-covering busi-
ness for himself and his business has increased in
leaps and bounds until today his shop is one of the
best equipped in the country.
Pyralin ivory is used, unless ivory is specified, on
