Music Trade Paper Discusses Incident in Industry
Pointing to a Sales Syndicate.
Last month it was currently stated that the price
agreement in the German piano actions industry was
converted into a sales syndicate, says Deutsche In-
sterntembau. Meantime, the Association of Piano
Action Manufacturers has circularized its customers.
Although in this statement it would appear as if it
was only a question of regularizing certain imma-
terial features in the management of the business
and the conditions of the association, further develop-
ments are being carefully watched in piano-manu-
facturing circles.
It is an old experience that all combinations which
have price agreements, or similar understandings,
must ever become stiffer and more stiff, if they are
not to disintegrate. In this way, during the last
few months, quite a number of sales syndicates have
been formed, and it would seem that the agreement
of the action makers will be converted into a strict
cartel. Such combinations are frequently accom-
panied by the taking over of a number of concerns
by one firm, while the larger firms buy up smaller
concerns in order to acquire greater influence and a
higher quota in their association. It is rumored
that similar operations are already taking place in the
action industry.
