A process for preservation of rubber against oxi-
dation and action of actinic light has been devised in
England, according to word just received by the De-
partment of Commerce from the American Trade
Commissioner at London, H. S. Fox.
The action of the National Committee on Wood
Utilization of the Department of Commerce in select-
ing Virginia for the first state-wide survey of un-
utilized waste wood gives that state an unusual oppor-
tunity to develop permanent wood-using industries,

Despite increased production of Dutch rubber and
the recent fall in the price of the commodity, the
British rubber restriction scheme will neither be with-
drawn nor modified, according to an announcement
made in the House of Commons this week.
An increase in rubber production to 1,000 pounds
per acre, with a consequent reduction in price and
more extensive use, were predicted by Sir Robert

A MUSICAL FOURTH.
An inspiring form of July Fourth observance, suit-
able for any community in our country, has been
worked out on a city-wide basis in Westfield, N. J.
It is a 7:30 sunrise service of patriotic ritual and
music, such as gives an exalted tone to the entire
day's celebration. The service was held recently for
the fourth successive year in Westfield. It is a
coincidence that this movement, in which music plays
a leading part, originated in Westfield, the birthplace
of the music memory contest, and that C. M. Tre-
maine was the inaugurator of both. A booklet, "How
to Honor Your Nation's Birthday," is distributed
without charge by the National Bureau for the Ad-
vancement of Music, 45 West 45th street, New York
City, of which Mr. Tremaine is the director.

New Lower Priced Models Added to the
Period Line of the Tonk Manufacturing
Company Attract Trade.
The Tonk Manufacturing Company, Chicago, has
answered the demand for lower priced Period benches,
by producing No. 74402'^, which provides the dealer
an opportunity to present his medium priced pianos
with better looking benches at reasonable prices.
These styles can be used by the salesman as special
inducements to the prospects to purchase.
The new numbers in Tonk benches introduced by
the Tonk Manufacturing Company, are in line with
the continuous purpose of the company to provide
complete satisfaction for the dealer's customer. It is
in these terms the company thinks when new pro-
ductions are planned. T i m i& a Period era when the

The designers in the great plants of the Tonk

the force. A bench to them is not merely a thing
to sit on but something with lines of beauty and
