Special Washburn Guitar, Made by Lyon & Healy
for Jack Penniwell, Creates Interest.
The following item was noticed in a recent issue of
the Chicago Evening American:
"At WEBH was a new and strange instrument said
to have cost $1,000 and to be the only one of its kind
in the world. It is, as near as I can gather, 'The Big
Four Washburn Guitar.' It was played by Jack
Penniwell and sounds considerably like an ordinary
steel guitar but with a booming accompaniment."
Lyon & Healy reports this instrument to be spe-
cially made by them for Jack Penniwell, prominent
Chicago guitarist, after plans made by Mr. Penniwell
and W. I. Kirk, superintendent of the Washburn
stringed instrument factory. The cost given in the
news item is not an exaggeration. The instrument
has four guitar keyboards and is built somewhat along
the lines of a zither. A very large chamber produces
a great volume of tone, rich and deep in quality and
of great carrying power.
LUMBER CONFERENCE MAY 1
Standardization to Be Effected at Gathering of
Lumber Interests in Washington.
The general lumber standardization conference
with Secretary Hoover in Washington will, be held
May 1, John W. Blodgett, chairman of the central
committee on lumber standards, announced recently.
It is believed that this meeting, which will be the
third general conference held during the past three
years, will see the program of standardization of the
softwood lumber industry brought to a successful
conclusion, the result of which will be an estimated
saving to the American people of many millions
annually.
Under the auspices of the National Lumber Manu-
facturers' Association and at its invitation Secretary
Hoover called the first meeting of representatives of
the industry together to explain his plan in May, 1923.
Mr. Hoover believed that if the lumber industry, the
largest single manufacturing industry in the United
States, with $12,000,000,000 capital, employing 800,000
persons and indirectly about 1,000,000, and with an
annual product of more than $3,000,000,000, could
adopt national standards, other industries would fol-
low lumber's example.
CARRIES CONN LINE.
The Nolin-Carr Music Co., which operates branch
stores in Hot Springs and Arkadelphia, has opened a
new local store at 606 Main street, Pine Bluff, Ark.,
with Harold A. Wood as manager. The store has
the agency for Conn band instruments and will main-
tain an up-to-date small goods department. Other
departments will include phonographs and sheet
music.
DEMONSTRATE.
Did you ever take a selection of beautiful num-
bers and give an evening recital in the home of one
of your customers? asks the "Vocalstyle News."
They appreciate this and generally have a critical
gathering of friends which gives you a chance to
gather some real prospects for "Playerpianos" into
the fold when you show the player as a musical in-
strument and not a mechanical one. Demonstrate!
