bench making in general and the admirable processes
employed in making Overton benches of all varieties.
After witnessing the Overton benches in all the
various models being made and put together he was
taken to the storage room for the celebrated "Over-
ton K.D." benches, the initials being abbreviations for
"knocked down."
The Overton Co. officials were once asked why
they give so much attention to their K.D. business,
to which they replied that this line of their product
and this system of supplying the trade came into
being in response to a real demand. These "knocked-
down" packages; cartons containing, each, a piano
bench, mean great saving in freight charges in han-
dling in bulk and storage and in space. It is esti-

mated that the saving in freight is fully sixty per
cent, and seventy-five per cent in storage space.
Indicated by the extensive supplies of benches put
up in cartons ready for shipment and the shipments
passing out of the shipping room the day of the
Presto man's visit it would seem as though a consid-
erable part of the music trade had acknowledged the
merits of the "knockcd-down, in carton," way of han-
dling piano benches, for which condition the S. E.
Overton Company may largely take credit.
Illustration No. 1 shown herewith gives a view of the
Overton K.D. Strechner piano bench, one of the
latest and handsomest Overton designs. This model
has player lift and large music compartment. Illus-
tration No. 2 shows the Overton patented corner bolt
construction, which holds the demountable legs per-

in the special fiber carton protected from dust, damp-
ness and scratches. The legs are in a separate com-
partment.
GENNETT IN MAYOR'S PLACE
Record of Elk's Toast Delivered on Starr Phono-
graph in Absence of His Honor.
A Gennett record played on a Starr phonograph
provided a feature in a Boston vaudeville house last
week and filled in for Mayor James M. Curley, when
his honor, scheduled for the event, was unavoidably
detained elsewhere.
Part of the act of McCool & Reilly, Keith circuit
performers, is the delivery of the "Elks' Toast," of
which Mayor Curley made a Gennett record previous
to the Elks' convention in Boston last July. Thou-
sands of the records were sold during the conven-
tion and many have been sold throughout the coun-
try since that time. The royalties from the sale of
the records were turned over by the mayor to Elks'
Charity Fund.
The vaudeville actors in the sketch at the Boston
theater are Elks and large numbers of Boston and
Winthrop Elks occupied seats in a group. McCool
explained the inability of the mayor to be present
and said that the sketch would be made complete by
the use of a Gennett record of the toast delivered by
the Starr phonograph.
AID TO WINDOW SHOWS.
A simple device, attached directly to the store win-
dow, is finding great popularity as .a means of effec-
tively displaying phonograph records and other musi-
cal items. It is named the "L & H Window Display
Fixture," and is now being offered by Lyon & Healy
of Chicago, through the various talking machine
jobbers.
One
feature
is particularly
noted.
This device attaches itself to the glass by means
of a simple rubber suction cup. Many novel window
display ideas can be worked out with this fixture.
The device is made in two forms. One has a special
holder for phonograph records. The other has a
small glass shelf upon which various articles can be
placed, allowing for close inspection.
BALTIMORE MAN IN CHICAGO

Joseph Fink, president of the Kranz-Smith Piano
Company, Baltimore, Md., recently returned home
from a western business trip. While in Chicago, Mr.
Fink placed a large order for musical merchandise
with Lyon & Healy.
The musical merchandise department of this com-
pany, now only six months old, is already securing
an enormous business. It has the exclusive agency
for Lyon & Healy Couturier band instruments and
Washburn stringed instruments. Mr. Fink is par-
ticularly enthusiastic over the new Lyon & Healy
Couturier trumpet and the new professional model
Washburn banjo, which he saw for the first time
while in Chicago.
The Fuller-Ryde Music Co., Indianapolis, reports
August and September business considerably ahead
of the business of the same v months in 1923.
