not submit to an audit."
Their investigation disclosed, they said, that only
46 publishers and 253 composers belong to the Ameri-
can society, although the membership list contains
thousands of names.
Letters were read from several prominent Ameri-
can composers, including Carrie Jacobs Bond, saying
that they would "never be part of the system which
compels the public to pay tribute for the privilege of
hearing their music."
CANARY SINGS HIT.
Mrs. Nye Farley, a singer living near Santa Clara,
Calif., has trained a four-year-old canary bird to
whistle popular melodies.
Johnnie, the bird, is
limited only by the range of his notes. He can re-
produce the air of the Remick hit, "Barney Google,"
with the exception of one low note, which he cannot
reach. The bird has several other tunes which at
times he renders perfectly.
Kelley, Cowles & Co., Hartford, Conn., recently
added a sheet music department.
