CHEMIST GIVES TALK ON GLUE
Musical Merchandise Manufacturers Association of
Chicago at Monthly Meeting Hear J. R. Powell.
J. R. Powell, chief chemist for Armour & Co., at
the recent meeting of the Musical Merchandise Manu-
facturers' Association of Chicago, at the Morrison
Hotel told of glue making, its proper treatment in
preparation and its effects on the resonant quality of
wood.
"The use of glue, rightly compounded, and its ap-
plication under the proper temperature, have much to
do with the sound quality of a violin or similar in-
strument," said Mr. Powell. "If it is not applied in
the proper manner and if the glue is not the right
kind the process will have a tendency to depreciate
the tone qualities of the instrument."
Members are looking forward to the December
meeting which will be held before Christmas on a
date to be fixed this week. The subject for addresses
and discussion is "Factory Management."
MODERN JACKSONVILLE STORE
Sheet Music Given Prominent Place in Arnold-Ed-
wards Piano Co., in Florida City.
In the new store of the Arnold-Edwards Piano Co.,
127 West Adams street, Jacksonville, Fla., a generous
portion of space on the ground floor is devoted to
the sheet music department. The wide scope of the
department was made clear to visitors during the for-
mal opening of the new store recently. In addition
to the timely populars in songs and dances, the stock
includes a wide line of standard music, classics and
teachers' supplies.
The store of the Arnold-Edwards Piano Co., is a
recognized musical center. A large part of the third
floor is given to a recital hall with a small platform,
•just the thing for pupils' concerts, and musical club
meetings. The rest of the floor is devoted to studios,
with sound proof walls and all other modern con-
veniences. There is an electric elevator, steam heat
throughout the building, in fact, nothing seems to
have been overlooked to make the house a comfort-
able and up-to-date one. Heading the progressive
concern, are W. E. Arnold, president, Walter M.
Edwards, vice president.
GOLD - MOUNTED FIDDLE BOWS
They Are Taxed Under the Jewelry Clause, But
Bone-Mounted Play as Well.
N E W WISCONSIN BRANCH.
Jesse R. Hand, proprietor of The Music Store in
Lake Geneva, Wis., recently leased the W. H. Cran-
dall store building in Walworth, Wis., and on De-
cember 1 opened a branch music store there. Mr.
Hand will carry a line of standard musical merchan-
dise as well as Brunswick and Columbia phonographs
and records. Miss Marlene Hawver is in charge of
the Walworth store.
FIRM T I T L E CHANGED.
The name of the Mason Music Co., San Antonio,
Tex., has been changed to the Mason-Stapleton Music
Co. and has doubled the original floor space at 214
Losoya street. The company was recently incor-
porated with J. W. Mason, president. O. W. Staple-
ton, one of the incorporators, is director of music at
the Travis Park Methodist Church.
TO INCREASE CAPITAL STOCK.
The Vincennes Phonograph Company, Indian-
apolis, Ind., last week filed notice with the' Secretary
of state that it would increase its capital stock from
$50,000 to $125,000.

George W. Pound, general counsel of the Music
Industries Chamber of Commerce, has announced
that the United States Internal Revenue Department
has reversed an informal ruling recently secured by
him to the effect that gold or silver mounted violin
bows are not subject to taxation under- the jewelry
clause of the Revenue Act of 1921.
This means that violin bows thus ornamented will
be subject to a tax of five per cent under the act.
Mr. Pound advises that is possible the gold or silver
ornamented articles be sold separately, so as to mini-
mize the amount of the tax.
N E W KENTUCKY STORE.
Colley's Music Store, Murray, Ky., was recently in
the rooms upstairs in the Allbritten building.
He
handled Victor and Edison machines and a full line
of records, sheet music, music rolls, school books,
etc. "Come up and let us play the new records on
the best machines in the world," is the invitation
printed in the newspapers.
