PANAMA PUBLISHER WRITES
Chas. T. Reid in Letter to Matt J. Kennedy Applies
for Membership in N. A. of M. A.
Interest in the National Association of Music Mer-
chants is not limited to the United States. As is well
known, the Canadian music trade and that of Cuba
keenly watches the practical efforts of the organiza-
tion. Here is a letter from Chas. T. Reid, a Panama
music publisher who recognizes the benefits of affili-
ation with the music merchants of the United States
and freely expresses it to Matt J. Kennedy, secretary
of the National Association of Music Merchants:
Panama, July 2, 1923.
My Dear Mr. Kennedy: Your letter of the 15th
ultimo received. I am very pleased with the infor-
mation it conveyed. I am interested in the publish-
ing of sheet-music now, but believe that my applica-
tion for membership in the Association of Music
Merchants will not bring me in touch with sheet
music dealers only, but will also bring me in touch
with music merchants, which will mean better busi-
ness for all concerned.
I am truly glad to learn that there is an association
in existence that is trying its utmost for the promo-
tion of music. This movement appeals to me as a
very great one, and seems to be comprised of great-
souled men. And whose one aim is to allow hu-
manity to enjoy the greatest of all charms—music.
I have been reading about the opposition of an
association to the broadcasting of music over the
radiophone without some kind of fee or license to the
copyright owners. I would like to be informed as to
the attitude of this association to such proposition.
Enclosed please find my application filled out and

MUSIC IN BUFFALO.
The recent addition of a music room to the Gros-
venor Library, Buffalo, N. Y., is part of the plans for
the encouragement of music which distinguishes that
city. Pianos for practice and for trying new or old
music in the library have been provided. The scores
of the Buffalo Orchestra and a large collection of
sheet music is made available to the public. The
Buffalo music trade considers the library scheme an
aid to sales of music and music goods.
INSTALLING SHEET MUSIC.
Although the new sheet music department of the
Sherman, Clay & Co., Portland, Ore., has not yet
been formally opened a considerable business is daily
accomplished there. W. J. Purdy, manager of the
sheet department, says the "automatic grand open-
ing" augurs well for its popularity. He has enrolled
a staff of bright helpers who are fast getting the
stock in order.

BIG SALES FOR REMICK SONG
Phenomenal Favor for "Barney Google" Reported
from All Parts of the Country.
J. H. Remick & Co., New York, has repeated its
amazing sales successes for "Carolina in the Morn-
ing" with "Barney Google," the frantic demands for
which come to the publisher and the jobbers from all
parts of the United States and Canada. In Portland,
Ore., there is no dance considered a pleasurable suc-
cess without the playing of "Barney Google" several
times on programs. Then everybody joins in when
it come to the chorus.
In the Remick Song & Gift Shop, 906 Market
street, San Francisco, the demands for "Barney
Google" are continuous and the shop has a standing
order for a certain number of copies of Barney in
bi-weekly shipments from the publishers. "Barney
Google" is topping the list of sales with Oshkosh,
Wis., music dealers.
SHEET MUSIC TRADE NOTES
A Few Items Interesting to People in Sheet Music
Department Are Printed.
The Sunday night services in a public park of the
combined Protestant churches of Auburn, N. Y., has
boosted the sales of sacred music and music books
in the music stores.
The Circle Music Publishing Co., Cincinnati, has
been granted a patent on a trademark to be used in
merchandising sheet music.
M. Witmark & Sons, publishers, New York,
moved recently to its new quarters at 165 Broad-
way.
James Burns, a colored song writer who died re-
cently, was one of the writers of "Ballin' the Jack,"
"Goofier Dust" and other songs and alone wrote
"Shoot the Rabbit," and "Coolin' the Coffee Pot,"
produced recently.
THE RADIO BOY.
Radio amateurs are generally frowned upon by
governments in other countries while the reverse is
true in the United States. This is no doubt due to
Secretary Hoover. When President Harding author-
ized the recent radio conference, following Secretary
Hoover's disclosure at a Cabinet meeting of the
chaotic air situation, the Secretary said he would be
present as the special representative of the American
small boy. Boys who didn't know a dynamo from a
buzz saw a year ago are now glibly talking about
such things as grid leaks, variometers, V-T amplifiers
and microfarads, and understand what they mean,
too. The youth of the land, especially the ubiquitous
Boy Scouts, are perfect "sharks" on the subject.
Some fourteen-year-old boys have transmitting sets
with so much juice behind them that even powerful
Arlington has to tell them to get off the air.
The Ohio Music Merchants' Association is distrib-
uting free the printed strips bearing the slogan
adopted by the association. The slogan is, "If You're
a Performer, You're a Better Listener," was origi-
nated by B. F. Beinkamp, of the Church-Beinkamp
Co., Cincinnati. The strips are printed in colors and
designed for use in show windows.
