PROMINENT PIANO MAN AS
KNOWN IN HIS HOME CITY
President E. R. Jacobson, of the Straube Piano Co.,
Is Paid Tribute by Hammond Newspaper.
It is often easier to '^size up" a man by the meas-
urement of his home city than in any other way. In
reporting the election of E. R. Jacobson, president of
the Straube Piano Co., to the office of vice-president
of the National Piano Manufacturers' Association, the
Hammond, Ind., Times, in the course of a column
article, said:
"Mr. Jacobson is generally looked upon*as one of

LATEST FINISH GIVES NEW
IMPULSE TO SCHAAF BROS. CO.
Progressive Industry at Huntington, Indiana, Is Hav-
ing an Increasing Call for Its Instruments.
Schaff Brothers piano factory, of Huntington. Ind.,
has shot ahead in the music world by manufacturing
a piano with a lacquer finish, as has already been
noted in Presto. The Huntington Press publishes a
popularly interesting article on the Schaff Bros. Co.
enterprise, in which the following appears:
"This finish had proven a success on furniture and
the experts at the Huntington plant decided to give
it a chance on pianos.' The lacquer finish is put on
the best of wood, and the wood used in the manufac-
ture of the Schaff pianos with this finish is Monti-
cello mahogany and Venetian walnut.
"As a piano finish, the lacquer finish has been bet-
ter than any of the experts expected. This finish does
not show finger prints, and is not affected by cli-
matic conditions. It is the most durable finish that
has ever been discovered for furniture and pianos for
it will not check. The Schaff Brothers concern have
placed a guarantee on their products finished with
lacquer guaranteeing that it will not check or be af-
fected by climatic conditions.
"Lacquer is a liquid that looks much like varnish.
When it is put on wood, it has the appearance of
being inlaid.
"Schaff Brothers were the first piano factory in the
country to use this finish, but since it has proven a
success many other manufacturers have followed. The
finish can not be patented because it is being used
by furniture manufacturers.
"In the music trade journals, the Huntington fac 1
tory has received much free advertising because of
the new finish. One journal states the Huntington
plant has made a departure from the traditional,
meaning that the new finish has taken the place of
the traditional varnish that has been used ever since
the piano industry began.
"The demand for the new finished pianos has kept
the factory working full time and the demand is in-
creasing. The lacquer finish is being applied to both
the player and straight piano."
