NEW BANJO AND UKULELE
New Creations of Lyon & Healy, Inc., Prove Popular
with Musical Instrument Trade.
Few innovations have met with such instant popu-
larity as the new Washburn air cushion banjos. The
Lyon & Healy factory is swamped with orders for
these instruments.
The air cushion on these instruments is made over
a single die in the form of a sectional resonator that
not only increases the tonal volume, but softens and
mellows the quality, taking from the tone the harsh-
ness that has ever militated against the use of a wire
strung banjo in the home. The resonator extends
over the shell, forming on the outside a metal apron
for the flesh hoop. The banjos may be had in three
styles, either with or without dowel.
Another Lyon & Healy innovation is the new tenor
ukulele. The instrument is to the ukulele family
what the viola is to the violin family, and it has
double the volume of the ordinary ukulele. The
scale permits of tenor banjo tuning, and this makes
it ideal for users of the latter. Its popularity for
use in uke clubs and for home use rivals that of the
regular "uke."
from people who have heard the music over the radio.
Health and children's records are in good demand.
Prices are about the same as last year, with a ten-
dency to remain firm."
INTEREST IN EDUCATOR SETS.
How the Q R S Music Company's Educator Rolls
have stimulated the roll business for dealers is told
by H. W. Weymann, head of H. A. Weymann & Son,
Philadelphia. The company named only recently re-
ceived its first large shipment of the Educator Rolls,
but its experiences so far have shown the wonderful
possibilities of the rolls for trade stimulation. Every
day repeat orders from dealers show how much the
men close to the ultimate consumers are interested in
the rolls. The repeat orders, according to Mr. Wey-
mann, reflect the enthusiasm of the playerpiano
owners over the Educator sets.
NEW WILSON DRUM MODELS
A TELESCOPE BATON.
A new telescopic conductor's baton that can be
carried in the vest pocket, drawn to full length or
closed instantly and can be readily seen in the semi-
darkness of the theater pit or orchestral hall is an-
nounced by C. G. Conn, Inc., Elkhart, Ind. It is con-
structed of best telescopic steel. The handles come
in either hardwood with a rosewood finish or of
celluloid. The baton is tipped with white bone. Size,
extended full length, 15 inches. Size, closed, 6J^
inches. Complete, in cloth bag.
Additional Numbers in Drum Styles and Tam-
bourine in Improved Form Announced.
Next week Thomas Reese will open his new music
store in the Dortz Building, Girardville, la.
Several new instruments of the Wilson Bros. Mfg.
Co., Chicago, were announced last week in addi-
tion to the Acme instruments which preceded them a
few weeks. The most recent models are the Wilson
Tympani rod bass drum, separate tension thumb rod
snare drum, and superfine professional tambourine.
The bass drum is equipped with extra heavy, strong
rods and hooks, and the tympani handles make ten-
sioning easy and rapid. The snare drum has all the
advantages of the ordinary separate tension drum, yet
has no key to carry, lose or forget. The shell is of
one piece, seamless.
The Wilson tambourine is constructed on the drum
idea, making tacks and repairs unnecessary. The
head is tucked in a groove and held solid by a metal
band, eliminating the use of tacks for this purpose.

Facts in Various Lines of Commodities Which Enter
Into Musical Instrument Manufacture.
The scarcity of some of the more staple items at
the lumber mills has resulted in a steady increase in
prices, and in consequence buyers in this market have
more or less been holding off until conditions become
more settled.
World wool production, still a little under the de-
pression left by the after-the-war surplus in stocks
and by decreased European consuming power, fell off
a trifle during 1922 from the levels it attained in
1921, according to estimates made public today by
the Commerce Department, and is still further be-
hind the average production of prewar years in its
total.
The American Piano Plate Co., Racine, Wis., last
year filed articles of incorporation, giving its capital
stock at $10,000. The incorporators were: W. T.
Walker, W. B. Mitchell and M. J. Griffith.
THE PHONOGRAPH BUSINESS.
The following •estimate by the commercial editor of
the Philadelphia Public Ledger was printed last week:
"Phonograph accessories business is good and grow-
ing each month. Last year the interest in radio was
reflected by a falling off in the demand for goods to
some extent, but it seems now that radio is helping
the phonograph business rather than hurting it. In-
quiries for records before they appear invariably come
