A man going under the name of R. X. C. Carlton,
who has recently been instructing a band at Suther-
land and Brule, Nebraska, has departed that locality
suddenly, leaving considerable indebtedness. He is
wanted by the sheriff of either Lincoln County, Ne-
braska, or Keith County, Nebraska, and a warrant has
been issued for his arrest for selling mortgaged prop-
erty. The scheme he worked was to gain the con-
fidence of the local music stores and sell instruments,
especially saxophones, to the bands he was organizing
for the dealer.
He would sell one instrument and pay for it, and
then another and pay for it, until he gained the con-
fidence of the music trade. He would then take out
three or four instruments, sell them, and take the
money and disappear. He is about 5 feet 8 inches
tall, weight about 150 pounds, very nervous disposi-
tion, ordinary features, and has the tip end of one of
the middle fingers on one of his hands missing.
"If you can assist us in locating this man through
your papers," writes Robert A. Goodall, of Ogalla,
Nebr., "it will be greatly appreciated. He is a good
saxophone player, which seems to be his hobby."
It is believed that Carlton has gone to California,
perhaps to Los Angeles, as he claimed that was for-
merly his home.

"There's a thrill in playing music you cannot get
from listening," is the heading to the printed matter
in the page ad of the Gulbransen-Dickinson Co., Chi-
cago, in the Saturday Evening Post of January 13. It
is a most effective talking point for the playerpiano
salesman. This is said in the attractive page display
which is set off with one of the characteristic Gul-
bransen pictures which tells a story:
"One thing is sure—you'd rather play music, per-
sonally, than just listen. With a Gulbransen you can
play good music, yourself, just as you want to play
it! It's easy. Instruction Rolls are provided. All
the family will quickly become expert.
"All the fun without long practice! All the joy
without hard work! All the music that you long for,
played with feeling and effect!
"And here's more! The words are on the rolls.
Play in any key. Pause when you will—then faster,
with perfect shading. Express yourself, musically.
There's nothing like it. Your Gulbransen dealer will
invite you to play it yourself. Do so."

The importance of the action in the piano is para-
mount. That its importance in the manufacture of
pianos was admitted from the beginning is shown in
the significant fact that the making of piano actions
was the first auxiliary industry in the piano trade.
Since 1875 the house of Wessell, Nickel & Gross, New
York, has specialized in the manufacture of the high-
est grade of piano actions.
But laymen and a great many musicians as well,
who simply take the piano as an established fact, do
not always understand the great importance of the
piano action, according to Wessell, Nickel & Gross,
in a treatise on the piano action. "What is the piano
action?" is asked. This is the answer:
"It is the motive power, so to speak, in the piano.
It is to the piano what the nervous system is to the
human organism—delicate, powerful, capable of
lightning-like rapidity or slow, dreamy strokes. It
is the system of lever which transmits the blow struck
on the piano keys and carries it to the strings. No
part of the piano has given the inventor more food
for thought and opportunity for the display of genius
than the action and its development, passing regularly
from stage to stage, from the simple and crude ham-
mer action of Christofori in 1707 to the modern
action, is clearly a perfect demonstration of the laws
of evolution."
