THE AMPICO CATALOGUE
Lists of Recordings Presented in Artistic and
Instructive Manner by the American
Piano Company.
The Ampico Catalogue of Music, issued by the
American Piano Co., New York, is of dignified and
thorough character worthy of the subject. As the
sub-title says, it is "a list of the recordings of pian-
ists whose art is thus preserved for present day
music lovers and for posterity." The list is adorned
by portraits with short biographies of many of the
composers and artists. The pages are enriched with
valuable notes on the music.
The Ampico catalogue is in three parts. The first
part has the accompaniment recordings, the second
the recordings listed under the names of composers,
and the third has an alphabetical list of all record-

APPEAL OF THE SONG WHISTLE
An Amazing Success of 1922 Was the Little Ludwig
& Ludwig Product.
One of the big trade hits of the past year was the
Ludwig Song YVhistle, made by Ludwig & Ludwig,
drum manufacturers, Chicago. The little instrument
had peculiar merits which appealed to customers,
especially in the summer months, but F. W. Miller,
advertising manager of the company, admits that
good publicity in the trade papers had considerable
to do with achieving the big result in sales.
From the day it was put upon the market the
sales increased steadily until the output became enor-
mous. Its ease of handling, and usefulness for camp-
ers appealed to a great number of people throughout
the outing season. Anyone can play it and when the
dealer used the selling point that the song whistle can
be played with the phonograph without any thought
of key or pitch it was all over but wrapping it up
and receiving the price. At first it was featured as
a drummers trap, and practically every drummer in
the country bought one, but it was the appeal to the
general public that brought the big sales.
NEEDED BY PIANO MAKERS.
In quantity spruce exceeds all other soft woods
used in the piano industry. That is because of its
suitability to the purposes of the piano manufacturer,
says Forest Products Reports. Wood consists of
fibres which may be compared to strings either par-
allel or interlaced. Most of those of spruce are par-
a'lel, hence their fine musical qualities. Most other
woods have shorter fibres and they may not be ar-
ranged so that they can vibrate freely, one interfer-
ing with another. Oak is a wood of that kind, and it
is poor material for sounding boards for pianos.

quickly finding the number sought.
Apart from the convenience of the catalogue to the
buyers of music rolls, the book is a valuable addition
to the music library. Beginning with the portrait of
Rachmaninoff on the frontispiece the following pages
contain the portraits of ninety composers and artists
living or dead.
The biographies which provide an admirable and
highly instructive feature, are succinct but complete
with all the intimate facts concerning the subjects.
The notes to the recordings tend towards the greater
appreciation of the particular selection as well as a
greater enjoyment of music generally in the Ampico
roll buyer.
The fast growing popularity of the Ampico music
rolls is due to the broad policy of the company mak-
ing them. That policy is suggested in a paragraph
of the introduction:
"To enjoy music thoroughly, a sincere conviction
is the first essential, and such a conviction is best
established through the self-service of personal ex-
plorations in the vast field of musical literature. Far
more harm than good has been done by those
critics who insist upon an ultra-refined standard at all
times, and look with contempt upon any taste that
may not yet have caught up with their own."
The introductory points out that familiarity with
the limitless beauties of the world's great music may
be attained by allowing the taste to grow gradually
and naturally on a foundation of sincerity. The
Ampico and Ampico music give the most convincing
proofs of how this process works out in actual life,
The so-called populars are not to be ignored. As
the Ampico catalogue says: "Whatever creates a
sincere enthusiasm should be encouraged; for all
music that is at all worthy of the name has some
significance, if only to stir the blood to healthy
dance or make manual labor more pleasant by its
rhythmic accompaniment."
