A REMARKABLE INVENTION
Tone Producer for String Instruments Im-
proves the Stradivarius Violin and All
String Instruments.
A Tone Producer, designed to improve and increase
the tonal quality of all musical string instruments,
has just been invented. The Tone Producer consists
of specially prepared wood, so constructed that it
conforms with the shape of the instrument in which
it is to be used. With the aid of this Tone Pro-
ducer the modern manufacturer
of violins, violas and 'cellos, as
well as all other string instru-
ments, is enabled to put into his
instruments the extraordinary
tone quality so highly prized in
the old Italian instruments of
Stradivarius, Guarnerius, Amati
and the other famous luthiers of
Italy's golden days of string in-
strument making.
With the passing of thon
famous makers their art has
been lost. In recent years, there
have been numerous attempts,
on the part of makers of mu-
sical instruments, to reproduce
the tonal quality found in the
creations of the masters. None
have been wholly successful,
though a near approach to that
end has been made by the in-
ventors of the Tone Producer,
which brings the glow of life
into the violin, according to the famous violinists
who have tried and now use it.
The Tone Producer is very simply constructed- It
is inserted under the top of the violin, after it has
been opened, as shown in the accompanying illus-
tration. The top of the violin is then secured and the
increased volume and sweetness of tone is immediate.
The wood from which this device is made is carefully
chosen and is matched with the wood of the top of
the violin. The Tone Producer is scientifically con-
structed, after extensive experiments in matters of
acoustics and effects on different woods. This inven-
tion brings forth the tone, free and clear as a bell,
and yet it has an amazing carrying power. During
the course of demonstrations, the qualities referred
to were noted, as two instruments of the same iden-
tical workmanship were played upon, by the great
artists, showing the difference between an instrument
to which is affixed the Tone Producer, and one
without.
The Virzi Brothers of New York, are the posses-
sors of many testimonial letters regarding the merits
of the invention. The stimulation afforded by this
device is not confined to the most expensive instru-
ments. It can be applied with equally good results
to an ordinary cheap instrument of the variety com-
monly used by students.
It was found that the device used in violins, in re-
cording laboratories or phonograph record-making
concerns, made it possible to produce a record that
brought out to the best advantage the sweet tones of
the violin. The Tone Producer greatly enlarged
has been found to give the same tonal qualities to a
piano or player-piano, to such good advantage as to
increase the volume and richness of their tones, and
it is now being manufactured in the highest grade
pianos.
In speaking to the inventors, the Virzi Brothers,
they stated that the Tone Producer was guaranteed
JOSEPH AND JOHN VIRZI.
to give results—so much so that an ordinary violin
tonal qualities would sound better than a Stradivarius
or Guarnerius after installation.
A few of the violinists who have heard and tried
or are using violins equipped with this device, and
praise it, are Kreisler, Heifetz, Thibaud, Spalding,
Betti, Casals, Bonucci, Pettine, Bickford, and many
other great artists.
T H E EXPRESSION L I N E .
Hooray! We understand that the expression line
is going back on Q R S music rolls, says the Gul-
bransen Bulletin.
Something that we have been
fighting for for years. This will be a great step for-
ward in better playing. First thing you know there
will not be any more marimba effects, jazz arrange-
ments and unnecessary perforations!

"They cost more because they're worth more," is
the advertising phrase used by the Clark Orchestra
Roll Co., De Kalb, 111. It is a sentence that voices a
policy of the house and one with a meaning clear to
every dealer and owner of an electric playerpiano.
The difference in price between a Clark roll and
other kinds is really negligible. But there is a differ-
ence. That difference, however, is not considered by
the wise and experienced buyers of playerpiano
music rolls.
The electric playerpiano is bought as a means to
profit. Standing alone by itself even in the most
crowded place it would never make a cent without the
agency of a player roll to operate which invites the
coins of visitors to the store, cafe or other public
place. It follows that the playerpiano rolls which
possess the most alluring qualities are the ones which
evoke the greatest desire to drop a coin in the slot.
An ingenious advertisement of the Clark Orchestra
Roll Co., describes the foolish player owner who
bought the cheapest roll he could find and chuckled
over the dime he had saved. That week his player
earned $12.15. Another owner paid ten cents more
for a Clark roll and on Saturday night alone he took
$27.50 from the coin box.
The latter dealer knew the Clark rolls cost more,
but he also had the irrefutable evidence that they
were worth more.
STARR I N PITTSBURGH.
The business of the Starr Phonograph Co., Pitts-
burgh, Pa., continues to grow and every month the
evidences of marked demand for Starr Phonographs
and Gennett records are presented in a new form.
This time it is the acquisition of a new delivery truck
that denotes the favor for the products of the Starr
Piano Co., Richmond, Ind. The truck has become
a notable object on the streets of the city. Hand-
some signs painted on its sides pleasantly advertise
Starr phonographs and Gennett records.
