In the West Indies, South America, Australia,
New Zealand, and even Spain, the American piano
has practically displaced the German instrument
since the outhreak of the war, is the statement of
the New York Evening Post. The article goes on
to say:
American piano manufacturers, with a good mar-
ket at home, never tried to develop an export trade
until the war drove foreign buyers to this country.
They then took up the problem of manufacturing
for the foreign markets.
Piano manufacturers report that their foreign
trade is growing steadily and- this year they expect
that this country will export a larger share than
ever before. Formerly Germany was the biggest
exporter of musical instruments and for years had
controlled the South American and Australian
trade.
The South American and other Latin countries
call for a piano much smaller and lighter in tone
than that used here, and because of climatic and
other conditions it is necessary in many instances
to construct the case and other wood parts from a
different type of wood from that used in the instru-
ments manufactured for sale in the United States.
Many manufacturers have studied this situation
and developed a piano that compares in price, dur-
ability and tone with the instruments offered by
Germany before the war. It met with almost im-
mediate success on the South American market, and
the manufacturers are now preparing to use every
means in their power to hold this trade. They re-
port that American-made pianos are in great de-
mand all over the world at present. The greatest
demand in the South American countries, however,
is for the light-case design, usually with candle-
sticks attached. This design is much cheaper and
liehter in weight. Exporters also expect that there
will be a good market for our pianos in Europe
once conditions become settled again.

Of the thousand and one troubles which con-
stantly menace the trees of New England and the
whole of the United States, the latest is the white
pine blister rust that is now worrying government
officials who have such matters in charge. As its
name indicates, it is limited to pine trees of the five-
leaved variety, but since their estimated value in the
United States is some $425 000,000, and since no
pine with the disease has even been known to re-
cover, lumber dealers and owners of white pine lots
everywhere have become very anxious over their
stock.
