WHEN PROFESSIONAL
SHOPPER IRRITATES
Irrepressible Female Who Makes Life an Irritant
for Clerks, Plagues Phonograph Salesmen.
Of course the professional shopper, the woman who
shops forever and never buys, occasionally encum-
bers the overstuffed chairs in the talking machine
store. She is among the continuous stream of
visitors at which the demonstrations are directed.
But no matter how tempting the talking machine
concert "may be, the irritating party whose con-
genial diversion it is to discover the price of things,
she has not the remotest intention of buying, is not
held long by its thrall. In the talking machine store
she is off her trail and soon gets back to the big
department store where there is a limitless field for
collecting her statistics.
For this party there is no thrill in listening to a
persuasive salesman telling nineteen necessary facts
about a phonograph she has not the ghost of a no-
tion of buying. In the same time spent in the
flufferies of the lingerie department in the next
block she can learn 640 different ways in which a
dollar seventy-five may be squandered.
In the talking machine store the keen zest of
warfare is missing for the professional shopper.
There the obliging salesman will demonstrate any
machine her haphazard fancy may fix on. In the
department store, on the contrary, the saleswomen
have long declined, except under the pressure of
the floorwalker, any necessity for obliging Mrs. Pro-
fesh. The talking machine salesman is trusting and
in the matter of patience Job was a grouch com-
pared to him. And blind! Why any little Flossie at
the ribbon counter can give him pointers in
perspicacity.
