Nashville, Term., Mayor
Proclaims "Sousa Day"
When John Philip Sousa and his band
visited Nashville, Tenn., on October 31, Mayor
Hilary E. Howsc issued a proclamation desig-
nating this date as Sousa Day. The proclama-
tion was as follows:
"John Philip Sousa and his band are com-
ing to the Ryman Auditorium on Friday,
October 31, 1930.
"The name of the famous composer and
conductor has become a household word
throughout America. This year is the golden
jubilee of his career as a band conductor. He
retired from the United States Navy with the
rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1917 on ac-
count of age. He will celebrate his seventy-
sixth birthday in November next. This is his
thirty-eighth annual tour of the United States.
"He has made a distinct contribution to the
happiness of every individual in his own coun-
try and of many distant lands. Millions have
heard his music through the medium of band,
orchestra, phonograph or radio. The world
not only admires but loves him, because he
has been a universal friend. He was America's
ambassador of good will long before anyone
thought of the title.
"The news that Sousa is coming again to
-our city cannot fail to arose the people of
Nashville and vicinity to the happiest of an-
ticipations.
"Therefore, let Friday, October 31, 1930, be
known and called Sousa Day. I would com-
mend its observance to all citizens of our
community, and urge them to let it be an oc-
casion of widespread rejoicing."

instruments in co-operation with Alsdorf's
School of Music in that city. Under the plan
the charge for lessons on band and orchestra
instruments is so graded that upon the comple-
tion of the course the student has paid for and
becomes the owner of the instrument used in
the instruction work. The amounts range from
$5.00 down and $1.00 weekly for fifty-two weeks,
upward according to the value of the instru-
ment selected, and many youngsters of New-
burgh have taken advantage of the opportunity
to secure an instrument and learn to play it on
easy terms.
Issues Illustrated List of
Majestic Band Instruments Selections for Band
and Orchestra Contests
The illustrated list of Majestic band instru-
ments made by the, Jones-Koeder Co., of Pekin,
111., gives full details of the cornets, trombones,
concert horns, French horns, symphony model
trumpet and symphony model trombone.
These band instruments are steadily making
their way into the favor of concert musicians, a
fact which is easily understandable when one
recalls the record of T. M. Koeder, who is the
designer of this line and the head of his own
factory, to which he gives his personal attention
every day. Mr. Koeder himself has spent his
entire lifetime in building band instruments and
not only selects the material and the workmen
but also designs the tools used in their con-
struction.
