Baby Orchestras Are
Moldrem's Specialty
(Continued from ptu/c 30)
ers, they perform with a precision that would
do credit to a mature artist, playing such se-
lections as the Melody in G with assurance and
precision.
Included in the baby group are several solo-
ists, one Ernest Roth, five years old, proving
an excellent 'cellist; while two-year-old Jose-
phine Abcede is vocal soloist, and Karol Kay,
violinist. Billy Barty, the three-year-old con-
ductor, is already a movie star, being the
youngest member of the Mickey McGuire
"Gang." A number of the children are mem-
bers of the movie colony, and, as a result, the
orchestra has made a number of shorts for
exhibition throughout the country.
As a result of the success of the Hollywood
group there has been organized throughout
the country close to fifty baby orchestras, some
fifteen of them being on the Pacific Coast
alone. The idea is in no sense freakish. For
it has been demonstrated that the interest and
enthusiasm of the parents increase in direct
ratio with the youthfulness of the child, and
for this reason, the orchestra helps to develop
and hold musical interest in many adults. More-
over, the training of the children at such ten-
der ages leads to their further development as a
musician as they grow older, until the time
comes for them to secure and perform on full
sized instruments.
Mr. Moldrem's methods have been widely fea-
tured by the Century Music Publishing Co., and
have aroused the enthusiasm of dealers and
teachers to such an extent that in the near
future it is believed that baby orchestras will
not be at all uncommon. It represents a most
interesting development of the present nation-
wide movement looking to the personal per-
formance of music.

School Band Tournament
Planned in Wisconsin
A1ILYVAUK.EE, VVIS.—The Wisconsin School Band
and Orchestra Association at its annual meet-
ing here elected John Kitowski, of Menasha,
president for the ensuing year. Other officers
are A. P. Enna, West De Pere, vice-president;
H. C. Wegner, Waupun, secretary and treasurer;
Peter Michelson, Richland Center, and Roy
Hrendel, of Wauwatosa, board of control; and
F. F. Schlosser, Algoma, editor of the Wiscon-
sin School Musician, the organization publica-
tion.
The next school band tournament will be
held in Menasha. Steps were taken at the meet-
ing to consider eligibility for participation in
the tournament. The constitution states that
participants must be under twenty years, or
twenty-one years, in vocational schools, at the
time the contest takes place.
Geib & Schaefer Line of
Megaphones Is Popular
Geib & Schaefer, Chicago, report a steadily
increasing demand for the company's line of
megaphones which are now made up in four
grades, including popular, standard, college and
artists'. The latter model, the latest out, is
distinguished by a new type of flare which adds
to its attractiveness and appears to insure its
popularity with professional musicians.
Talking to a representative of The Review,
Sales Manager F. S. Metre said: "Most of
my time for a number of weeks past has been
spent on the road and I have covered a great
deal of territory, visiting all our distributors
and meeting a very large number of people
with whom we have business contacts. We have
been very greatly pleased by our business re-
sults so far this fall, and from observations I
can say truthfully that the music business itself
is very satisfactory indeed and is in much bet-
ter shape than a number of other commodity
lines which people generally think are neces-
sities, such as haberdashery, clothing, furniture
and the like.
"Our case business steadily gains in volume.
We have got so complete a line that we know-
how to quickly fill almost any instrument case
order and our factory facilities permit us to
take on bin contracts."
