Paul Lincke, Viennese composer of the "Glow
Worm" and many other operettas, has written
a fox-trot in the American style, called "A
Night in May," which is being published in
this country by the Edward B. Marks Music
Co., New York. The new number, like all of
the works of this composer, is melodic and
fully as worthy in musical value as any of the
earlier Lincke hits. Lt can also be played as
a gavotte or sung as a ballad, although the
publishers intend to boost it primarily ais a
fox-trot at first. The original German title is
"Ach Die Bo.se Liebe," while in France it is
known as "Ah! La Fleur D'Oranger." In both
countries and elsewhere in Europe it has been
a great success.
For this country a slight change in the idea
of the title and lyrics was deemed advisable
and the task was entrusted to Robert A. Simon,
who is known not only as a lyricist of the bet-
ter grade but as a musical critic as well. Mr.
Simon, at present connected with the Judson
Radio Corp. and the New Yorker magazine,
has written a, lyric that is popular without be-
ing cheap, simple without being dull.
The dance orchestration has been arranged
by the man who is generally considered the
ace for this particular type of melody number,
VV. C. Folia. A concert arrangement, based on
a score made by Lincke himself, is also being
issued.
