Philip Willems
Corps, then tried his hand at coaching the Arjjo
American Legion Drum Corps, and now, while
still a junior in high school, he is directing his
third corps, the Western Springs American Le-
gion Drum Corps.
Willems started early, and at the age when
most boys are still reading Horatio Alger, Jr.,
he was pounding the snare drum in the Ludwig
Drum Corps, composed mainly of employes of
the plant of Ludwig & Ludwig, drum makers,
Chicago. Fortified by his drum corps experi-
ence he won the position of snare drummer in
the Lyons Township High School Band, while
still a freshman. He likewise captured the In-
dividual Drumming Contest, sponsored by the
Kiwanis Club, at the Court Theatre, Chicago,
in December, 1926. He was also invited to take
part in the pageant, "The Spirit of 76," at the
Senate Theatre, in 1927.
Just to prove his versatility, Willems thumps
out Collegiate Rhythms in the "Rhythm Ra-
jahs," a high school jazz orchestra.
The photograph of Willems, with a Ludwig
Separate Tension Street Drum, finished in Un-
popular Ludwig Peacock Pearl, is pronounced
by experts as the "perfect" picture of a street
drummer, so far as position of hands and pos-
ture are concerned.
The K. K. Forbes Piano Co., the old-estab-
lished music house of Birmingham, Ala., has
opened a complete new department devoted to
>mall musical instruments and sheet music in
its store at 1922 Third avenue, that city. The
new line includes Gibson fretted instruments
and lUiescher band instruments.
