Sherman, Clay & Co. Open Remodeled
Band and Orchestra Department
Unusually Fine Accommodations Provided for the Display of Band and Orchestra In-
struments in Company's Main Store in San Francisco—Harp Room a Feature
C A N FRANCISCO, CAL., September 20.—On
Wednesday, September 12, hundreds of San
Francisco musicians attended a formal opening
of the remodeled band and orchestra instru-
ment department at Sherman, Clay & Co.'s
Sutter and Kearny street store, and listened to
a continuous program provided by some of the
best talent in the city. This opening marked
the completion of the remodeling operations on
the fourth floor that have taken the greater
space of 30x60 feet. This has been used as a
central rectangle of display counters, surround-
ing two cases designed for the display of Bacon
banjos and Martin guitars, with drawers for
miscellaneous items. The side rooms were left
intact except on the south side of the building
where partitions were moved back several feet.
Among the side rooms is the drum room
where a very large and complete stock of Lud-
wig instruments is carried. Next to this is the

some expensive old French prints complete this
dignified but gorgeous setting for the Lyon &
Healy harps for which Sherman, Clay & Co. are
agents.
With the exception of the harp room, the
decorative scheme is Spanish, stippled compo
plaster tinted in two tones of warm yellow
brown having been used for the walls. The
woodwork is in walnut finish. A special set of
furniture in antique walnut and red morocco
leather completes the furnishings.
B. R. Hunt Mfg. Co. to
Announce New Line of Cases
UNION CITY, JND., September 22.—An announce-
ment of unusual importance to the trade will
soon be made by the B. R. Hunt Mfg. Co., of
this city, manufacturer of the well-known
"Triple A" line of musical instrument cases,
covers and accessories.
This announcement will illustrate and de-
scribe a new line of side-opening style cases for
all musical instrument made of three-ply chip
covered with a beautiful black alligator grain
"Hunt-Fibre" imitation leather that is abso-
lutely waterproof and washable. All edges of
these new cases are neatly and durably bound
and all trimmings are cadmium nickel plating
that will not rust.
The B. R. Hunt Co. has already received a
large response in orders for this new line of
cases even before it has been formally an-
nounced to the trade.

part of the Summer. The new department is
pronounced to be one of the most beautiful and
one of the best designed in existence.
The general plan of remodeling was the work
of E. J. Delano, former manager of the small
goods department at this store, and now gen-
eral manager of the Sherman, Clay & Co.'s
band and orchestra instrument affairs. The
actual work was superintended by one of the
best-known interior decorators of the city. Ray
W. Towle, who is now manager of the depart-
ment at the store, arranged the successful con-
cert for the opening day. .
The floor was originally cut up into several
glass-enclosed rooms with a service counter
forward, fronting the elevators. By the new
plan the two largest rooms in the center of
the floor were torn out, making available a floor

brass instrument room with a representative
display of King and Cleveland goods. On the
left hand side are Manager Ray Towle's office,
a room devoted entirely to second-hand stock, a
violin room and the new harp room.
The harp room is the crowning glory of the
whole decorative plan, and has aroused much
admiring comment. It is an exact reproduction
of the music room of an ancient French chateau.
The prevailing color scheme is green and gold.
Walls and ceiling are in a soft green in antique
finish. The walls are paneled with moulding
that has been gold-leafed and then rubbed down
to represent wear. Over-curtains are dark
green brocade and window curtains are golden
yellow silk. Harps are placed on specially
made pedestals covered with satin in an old
rose tint. An especially beautiful period model
grand piano, to match the decorations, has been
placed in the room, together with settee and
chairs of the period. A real Oriental rug and

sponse to 'numerous calls for some device or sys-
tem to quickly determine equivalent tones on the
various keyed instruments, the York Band In-
strument Co. has issued a pocket Transposition

both band and orchestra work.

Among other interesting York notes is the report
that a York B. & O. Horn that was sold in 1896,
thirty-two years ago, was recently repaired and
is still goi'/ig good.
