Uke Made
for Prince of
Wales
Chicago factory via airplane express to an out-
bound liner at New York City.
Johnny Marvin, widely known vaudeville and
Victor record artist, booked for an engagement
of several weeks in London, requested the
Harmony Co. to make a special ukulele for him
to present to the Prince of Wales.
With the exceptional workmanship and finish
that was necessary in constructing an instru-
ment for so distinguished a personality, time
became a matter of hours, and the air-express
service had to be resorted to in order to make
delivery before Marvin sailed on the "Levia-
than."
The ukulele for H. R. H. was made of espe-
cially selected Hawaiian Koa in a large tenor
ukulele size. The neck was of mahogany trim-
med with an imitation pearl headpiece, beauti-
fully engraved with the Prince's insignia and
title. The instrument was also fitted with the
new Harmony "aero-bridge," and with gold-
plated trimmings. It was especially treated to
withstand the trip across the ocean.
Simultaneously with making the ukulele for
the Prince, the Harmony Co. also made two
similar instruments for Johnny Marvin, which
he will personally use in his London engage-
ments and Victor recordings.
These instruments were likewise especially
prepared for the ocean voyage so that the
change in climate will not affect the tonal qual-
ities.
Duplicates of the ukulele for the Prince of
Wales, and for Johnny Marvin, are being made
by the Harmony Co. for display at the Music
Trades Convention at the Commodore next
month.
