Joe Schuster Wins
Contest at Hotel Astor
Tenor Awarded First Prize for Singing Two
of M. Witmark's Best-Selling Publications
At a recent music publishers' contest among
the top-notchers at the Hotel Astor, the first
overtones, and should sooner or later attract
some of the biggest "name" soloists of the
country.
Another new number by Gus Kahn and Neil
Moret is "Ready for the River." Mr. Daniels
expressed himself as being exceptionally pleased
with the showing of the firm's catalog during
the present season, as "Chloe-e," "Moonlit
Waters" and "An Old Refrain and an Old
Guitar" have been 100 per cent successful me-
chanically and are selling everywhere.

prize was awarded to Joe Schuster, of the pro-
fessional staff of M. Witmark & Sons, New
York, for his singing of the firm's numbers, "I'm
Away From the World When I'm Away From
You," and "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life." The
former number is by Lew Pollack and Sidney
Clare, and the latter is from Victor Herbert's
"Naughty Marietta," which is becoming a best
seller. Both these numbers were adapted to
Mr. Schuster's own interpretation and his well-
manipulated tenor scored a decided hit.
This is nothing new for Mr. Schuster, as he
has been winning similar distinctions right
along. He is also a popular writer himself,
having to his credit "Two Little Pretty Birds,"
"Mamma's Little Baby" and the new success,
"Flora," all of which are Witmark publications.
Roy Smeck, banjoist, known as the wizard
of the strings, has recently been secured under
an exclusive contract by the Irving Berlin
Standard Music Corp., New York, to write a
scries of tenor banjo solos for the firm. Mr.
Smeck has the reputation of being the highest-
priced banjo soloist in the country.
The first release of Roy Smeck's banjo solos
will be announced shortly, and new numbers
will be added to the catalog periodically. In
addition, arrangements have been made with
other firms for the exclusive rights to standard
compositions for banjo transcriptions by Mr.
Smeck. A special series of these transcriptions
of famous standard selections will later be got
out by the firm.
