Garbonara Engaged to
Write Motion Picture Music
Well-known Composer Placed Under Contract
by Irving Berlin Standard Music Corp. to
Specialize in That Work
Gerard
Carbonara, prominent
American
composer, has been signed recently under an
exclusive contract with the Irving Berlin
Standard Music Corp., New York, to write
a series of motion picture compositions for the
Haven. In the few months which have elapsed
since the opening of the Roger Sherman show-
house he has trained the men into such an
excellent ensemble that the press has been
unanimous in declaring it to be the leading
orchestra in the New England States.
Mr. Carbonara was born in New York City
and was sent abroad by his parents at an early
age, studying in the Naples Conservatory of
Music under Martucci and later with Dvorak
in Vienna. He is a violinist of distinction and
as a composer has an established reputation.
His associates, Maurice Baron and Leo
Kempinski, and other prominent composers
who are under exclusive contract with the
Irving Berlin Standard Music Corp., are very
enthusiastic with regard to their new affiliation
with him.

The Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia has
recently announced a world-wide competition
for composers of chamber music, in which
$10,000 in prizes will be awarded. The first
prize will be $5,000, the second $3,000 and the
third $2,000 and it is believed that these are the
largest prizes which have ever been offered for
compositions in the chamber music form. The
contest is limited to compositions of chamber,
music for three, four, five or six pieces and the
piano may be considered as one instrument.
Any composer may submit more than one
piece and may be awarded more than one prize.
The contest closes on December 31, 1927 and
applicants are asked to submit their work, with
a nom de plume only; sending in name and ad-
dress in a separate envelope to the Musical
Fund Society, 407 Sansom street, Philadelphia,
Pa. The judges are to be announced by the
Society before the closing date.

during the greater part of the Summer. Mr.
Richmond is enthusiastic with regard to busi-
ness conditions this Fall and claims that the
firm has enjoyed the best September sales since
it was organized. Miss Dora Alexander, of the
sales department of the Richmond Music Co.,
states that there is a big demand from the trade
this season for piano novelties. Such numbers
as: "The Doll Dance," "Dolly Dimples,"
"Polly," "Flapperette" and others released by
various publishers are showing up big in sales
volume. There is also noticeable at present a
return to popularity of the waltz ballad, Miss
Alexander said.

Future scanning projects are planned by the International Arcade Museum Library (IAML).
