The Music Trade Review
Ludwig & Ludwig Issue
New Catalog for 1927
Latest Publication of Chicago Drum Manufac-
turer Model of Typography and Arrangement
for the Dealers' Use
CHICAGO, I I I . , January 29.—The original paint-
ing of "The Drummer at Valley Forge" is re-
produced on the front cover of the 1927 cata-
log of Ludwig drums and accessories, which has
jus,t been issued by Ludwig & Ludwig, and is
typical of the attractive art work and care taken
throughout in preparing the book for dealers'
use.
In addition to the use of high grade stock
and attractive arrangement, the retail prices
have been listed along with the handsome illus
trations and descriptive matter in order that
the catalog may act as a guide or "sales manual"
for the dealer. Many other important features
are included to serve this purpose, such as new
developments in drum construction, photographs
of prominent tympanists and drummers using
Ludwig drums and accessories, and important
articles about construction detail.
The new Ludwigold iridescent display finish
is introduced on the first page of the book with
attractive reproductions of the glittering, flash-
ing gold finish on the Super-Ludwig snare drum
and the center-support bass drum. This new

The Quality Supreme"
finish, obtainable on professional model snare
drums, bass drum and tympani, is said to take
the light and reflect an unusual brilliant radi-
ance. It is satin smooth, easy to clean and
keep clean and the most durable of display fin-
ishes. The Ludwigold finish with other orna-
mental gold finishes has been designed to add
flash, color and beauty to the percussion sec-
tion.
The new series of Ludwig figure subject drum
scenes shows a group of hand-painted figures in
black and white which have been made exclu-
sively for Ludwig scenes. The original scenes
are described as lavish in color tints.
The officers and managing directors of the
company are shown opposite the index to con-
tents, the latter containing an extensive list of
instruments and accessories including a number
of new developments. Chief among these is the
Ludwig Foot-pedal, the Ludwig All Metal Sepa-
rate Tension Snare Drum and the latest
achievements, the Natural Way Balanced-action
Pedal Tympani and the Super-Ludwig.
The new Super-Ludwig is shown with the new
principles of snare control and snare adjustment.
The snare control allows an individual adjust-
ment of each snare. This provides greater re-
sponse and control of snare action, and is said
will end the drummers' "snare problems" en-
tirely.
The first section of the catalog gives the many
other models with illustrations and full descrip-
tions while the next section of the book gives
the tympani and tympani accessories, beginning
with an article on "Tone Analysis of Pedal
Tympani," by Wm. F. Ludwig, president of
Ludwig & Ludwig. In this section the Natural-
Way balanced action tympani is described. Fol-
lowing this the trap drum outfits are listed and
many accessories made by this company, in-
cluding Ludwig brass cymbals and holders, tam-
bourines, Spanish castanets, song whistle, synco-
jazzstick, wood blocks, whistles and various imi-
tations, drum sticks, repair parts and drum
heads with full description of manufacture of
the latter.
Joseph Mock, secretary of the William R.
Gratz Import Co., New York, is back at the
office after a short illness. He declares that
he is now in fine physical shape and ready to
make a drive for business.

New Washburn Ukes
Announced by Lyon & Healy
Handsome Concert Models Featured in "Coun-
ter Sales Book," Issued by Chicago Manu-
facturer
CHICAGO, 111., January 29.—A number of attrac-
tive new styles of Washburn ukuleles are intro-
duced by Lyon & Healy, manufacturers, in the
new "Counter Sales Book" the company has
just issued.
For the first time two new professional con-
cert-size Washburn models are presented. These
instruments have been carefully constructed and
emphasize master craftsmanship throughout.
They are made of genuine Koa-wood with fancy
pearl inlay. In addition to their artistic ap-
pearance, they have been scientifically con-
structed to produce a resonant, sweet, far-reach-
ing tone. The body is made of fine seasoned
selected Koa-wood with satin finish, while the
top and back edges, center of back and sound-
hold are inlaid with oriental pearl. The top and
back edges are bound with white ivorine as well
as the sound-hold edges. Other features in-
clude a new model end extension ebony bridge
with four white bone pins and bone fret; genu-
ine ebony fingerboard with five pearl inlaid de-
signs; genuine magohany three-piece neck,
beautifully shaped and finished.
Another new professional instrument is the
Washburn shrine model constructed for con-
venience in handling and at the same time for
far-carrying tonal volume. It has a unique shape
and snuggles into the arm and lap of the player,
enabling him to handle it with great ease and
comfort. It is particularly adaptable for play-
ing in large halls and auditoriums because of its
volume and tonal qualities.
Other ukuleles include the Mauna Loa brand
of banjo ukuleles, metal shell banjo ukuleles,
novelty colored banjo models, "Camp Ukes" and
Washburn concert ukuleles.
The next section of the catalog illustrates and
describes the Washburn line of tenor banjos,
Lakeside tenor banjos and accessories for banjo
instruments.
Following this the line of band instruments is
shown, including the new Lyon & Healy trum-
pets with genuine continuous conical bore.
