Window Display Proves Vital Factor

winners in the recent Century Music Co.'s
window display competition. Both of these
were selected by the judges for the care and
prize winner, who in a letter to the Century
Co. said: "Like many other dealers I have car-
ried in stock a complete line of Century music.
Of course, having everything a customer called
after putting in an attractive window, I found
the music-loving- public craved the Century
Edition. During the two weeks of the Century
display we sold more copies of Century than
we did of popular music, which with us is al-
ways quite large."
This is a demonstration of the value not
only of this particular Century display, but again
shows the importance of properly displayed
musical merchandise of all kinds. It is not
necessary to make further remarks on the value
of store exteriors, etc., because the progress
made in thjs direction in recent years is gen-
erally recognized and widely accepted as an im-
portant feature of retail establishments.
The third Century prize winner, also shown
here, is that of Weeks & Dickinson Music Store,
Binghamton, N. Y. The displays in this estab-
lishment are changed frequently and generally
carry current messages. It was only natural
then for the experienced window dresser in
this establishment to give some thought to a
window on Century music that would have un-
usual appeal. Here is a window that takes the
standard issues and arranges them into artistic
fans and rosettes, which is a difficult undertak-
ing, as anyone who has ever tried it will agree.
It is worth while when well done and the win-
dow dresser in this case achieved the results de-
sired. Aside from the artistic features, he has
also included a merchandising appeal through
the arrangement of the center piece with the
Century placard and price marking.
Naturally, while laying particular stress on
window showings, it must be taken for granted
through the same line of reasoning that displays
in the interior of a store are every bit as valu-
able as sales creators. Displays add to volume
of sales. They are a saver of a salesman's time
and they move goods that might otherwise not
be called for. Department stores and chain

attention given to the arrangement of the dis-
play and for their appeal from an artistic as
well as a merchandising standpoint.
This annual co-operation between publisher
and dealer has shown unusual progress each
season in the interest displayed by merchants.
There are two reasons for this, one being.the
rewards themselves in the forms of prizes and
the other being the added business that accrues
to the establishment through attractive dis-
plays. This latter factor is important and proof
of it is given by the proprietor of the Actuelle
Music Co. of Youngstown, Ohio, the second
